So I woke up this morning to read this. Is Chief Wahoo Finally on the Way Out?

Those who live in America or have a good understanding of the American leagues/culture, why is it that names like the Cleveland Indians and particularly Washington Redskins are so offensive? Is "Redskins" really as bad as "the n word"?

Fair and unbiased opinion please, any racism then I can and will hand out infractions.

Sorry Gibbsy, I don't read the RCT very often. I will attempt to make this as concise as possible, although I could probably write a short book on the history of slang to refer to groups of people in the States.

Being my age, I have seen the changes in African American society. Of course, the "N-word" (which still exists in one form in the name of the UNCF) and "Colored" were the main terms when I was young. Then "Colored" became offensive and was replaced by "Blacks" which has since been deemed offensive and replaced by the new p.c. term, "African Americans".

No other ethnic group here has bellowed about things like African Americans. (I am not judging it as wrong or right, just stating a fact.) So, in essence, as a result, the political correctness of today has evolved into a means of referring to groups of people that requires ethnicity of minorities be described in proper terms of the person's origin, rather than slang references to appearance, etc.

Thus, the people who are Native Americans on the whole don't like the term "Redskins". "Indians", a term derived from Columbus' error in thinking he had sailed completely around the globe and ended up in India, while technically wrong, seems to be acceptable to most Native Americans.

But, Native Americans haven't really rallied for a change to the name "Redskins" in large numbers until maybe a decade ago, I would guess. Numerous high schools have voluntarily gone on to, or in some cases via state laws in some places been forced to, change their nickname.

The NCAA has a similar rule, and gave schools a certain amount of time to comply, and actually penalized one school for refusing (I don't recall who right off the top of my head).

Congress has actually heard this and considered a law to force the Washington Redskins to change. Thankfully, they did not.

NOTE: They should have the right to be offensive, just as people have the right to be offended. That's how our federal government should work based upon our Constitution, and stay out of morality, allowing states and individuals (which includes corporations here) to make their own decisions and find a compromise or solution, or leave things status quo.

So, that leaves the Washington situation up in the air. This has been discussed since I was a kid (I'm 52), so this is nothing new, but the number of Native Americans wanting that name changed has grown a lot in my lifetime, and I'm certain that name will be changed one of these days, although it might not happen while Dan Snyder owns the 'Skins.

Aside from African Americans, there has been little grumbling from other minorities, or Whites, regarding slang descriptions. What has happened is that society as a whole has become more p.c. here, and while a lot of Native Americans could care less, there is a group in our nation that wants everything to be p.c. (as they see it, whether it actually offends the individuals within groups or not), and wants everyone to comply with their viewpoint. There is an increasing amount of Whites, African Americans, etc., that are pushing Snyder to change the name.

It's really a push from the politically correct left that is causing these things to happen, aside from the African Americans, who have pushed for their own changes and got the ball rolling in the first place. I don't see the same thing happening within other ethnic groups to that degree, so I don't think it's as big of a deal to Native Americans as it would have been to African Americans had the team been called the Washington N-gg-rs, for example. That would have been changed long ago.

Thus, you have other names, Boston Celtics or Notre Dame Fighting Irish, for example, while singling out an ethnicity (the mascot is a leprechaun for both Boston and Notre Dame), but no one seems to care about other slang ethnic descriptions, and the p.c. leftists will make excuses as to why names and logos for teams like Celtics or Fighting Irish are okay but Redskins or Indians logos are considered offensive.

It's more about the current state of politics here, rather than people actually wanting to punch someone in the face for calling them certain slang terms.

Ah, now that I've tried to give Gibbsy my p.o.v. on that subject, let me post what I was on this thread for in the first place, to show you guys what halftime is like during a football game here.

This is TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band In The Land), The Ohio State University Marching Band.

I don't think anyone who watches this will be disappointed. They are amazing! (The first 45 seconds or so is a waste, so skip ahead to almost a minute into the video to see TBDBITL performance.)

Reading Westboro Baptist Church tweets actually want to make me kill someone. And I would never kill someone.
It's disgusting. Here's a photo of the organisation's founder:
