piss alley is that just heaps of pubs and s**t? boozing? as in sinking piss? ive spent 1/2 my 29 years practicing boozing. international license ill have to get onto cause def wanna do the mario kart thing. pretty sure shinjuku is where we are gonna stay in tokyo is that place good to get out and party? or where else in tokyo ya reckon to stay? going over for my 30th so where would be best place to get blind and have a good time in Japan? how long before we go should we book accommodation everything else is done going with a travel 'expert' cause he been to bali 20+ times and wants to just wing it. tell me to get ****ed if im asking too much. cheers manI visit Japan every year.
Mostly I'm there to stock up on clothes and vinyl but outside of that, try: Naoshima, Piss Alley, Getting your international license and doing the Mario Kart thing (Tokyo), play the VR Mario Kart machine. Osaka is dope. Koenji for live music, Shinjuku for techno.
Stay on the JR line in Tokyo and close to Americatown in Osaka. Don't get a hotel (super expensive) get an AirBNB instead.
Also practice boozing, because boozing in Japan is really fun.
Piss Alley is full of super small bars that seat 3 or 4 people. Good place to meet other travellers and there's heaps of yakatori grills there:piss alley is that just heaps of pubs and s**t? boozing? as in sinking piss? ive spent 1/2 my 29 years practicing boozing. international license ill have to get onto cause def wanna do the mario kart thing. pretty sure shinjuku is where we are gonna stay in tokyo is that place good to get out and party? or where else in tokyo ya reckon to stay? going over for my 30th so where would be best place to get blind and have a good time in Japan? how long before we go should we book accommodation everything else is done going with a travel 'expert' cause he been to bali 20+ times and wants to just wing it. tell me to get ****** if im asking too much. cheers man
mad campaigner cheers for that. are all those places in Tokyo? planning on going Osaka for like 3 days what do you reckon for there? im packing myself never left Australia. going over start of march so 3 months away im tryna get the campaigners to lock in hotel or whatever asap but both are on the mines on night shift or getting ****ed up when home.Piss Alley is full of super small bars that seat 3 or 4 people. Shinjuku is great, and it's on the JR Yamanote line, which is basically like Tokyo's "city loop" so you're close to all the rad s**t. Roppongi is the place to go if you want to get smashed and pickup a backpacker you'll never speak to again, but try to avoid getting your drink spiked if you do go there (ie: don't hang with the African touts or try and chat up prostitutes). Can't say where the best place to get blind is really, depends on what you like: I usually check Resident Advisor/ nightclub listings etc. and go to places with music I'm into (which usually in Shinjuku or Shibuya). Koenji is kinda like what Brunswick Street use to be- heaps of bars with live bands etc. and that's pretty rad too.
You can get blind everywhere in Japan because drinking on the streets is legal and you can buy a 500ml of Asahi for a couple of bucks at the 7-11 (Lawsons Family mart is the big chain there). First time I went there I did just that and checked out https://www.timeout.com/tokyo to see what was on. There's a pretty decent gig guide in there and it's usually up to date with art exhibitions etc.
Accommodation might be tight if you're in a large group and want to stay in the same place so get in an soon as possible; there's not a lot of space in Shinjuku especially.
When are you heading over? Fuji Rock Festival in August is amazing...
Wicked, that's cherry blossom season. If you're lucky you can also catch the end of the snow season too.mad campaigner cheers for that. are all those places in Tokyo? planning on going Osaka for like 3 days what do you reckon for there? im packing myself never left Australia. going over start of march so 3 months away im tryna get the campaigners to lock in hotel or whatever asap but both are on the mines on night shift or getting ****** up when home.
thanks man for taking time to give us some info gonna help us heaps. going first 1/2 of march n 5 days in Hakuba at start so hopefully still snow and still get to see the blossoms. yeah i was looking at hotels going wtf for what it is its s**t found a few houses on bnb way cheaper. i was thinking bout getting a joint in Tokyo for the 10 days so dont have to cart around luggage and can wing it in Osaka or better to just work out where we'll be at and book it up?Wicked, that's cherry blossom season. Hotels are ridiculously expensive- check out the hostels or get a bunch of Airbnb's next to each other (you'd want to look at the hostels soon though).
Ropoggni, Shinjuku, Shibuya, all (central) Tokyo. 3.5 million people go through the main station a day there, to give you an idea of the size of it. Not hard to find a good time.
Osaka is a killer city too. It's a bit more ghetto than Tokyo. Heaps of interesting Love Hotels so if you find a nice girl/boy and fancy banging them in a fake Disney castle/ animal shelter/ classroom etc. you're in the right place (https://blog.hotelscombined.com/love-hotels-valentines-day-japan/)
Shinshibasi (aka America Town) is tacky during the day (it's like a s**t Vic market with fake Gucci or whatever) but at night time there's heaps of killer bars etc. Great music scene in Osaka and home to one of the best record stores in the world (Revelation Time)
The train stations in Tokyo all have baggage lockers so you can put your suitcases there if you're going to Osaka and don't want to lug your s**t around (check: https://tokyocheapo.com/living/luggage-storage-in-tokyo/). I use them all the time.i was thinking bout getting a joint in Tokyo for the 10 days so dont have to cart around luggage and can wing it in Osaka or better to just work out where we'll be at and book it up?
ive read his Napoleon one. was a good read, although it took a bit of reading as the little fella lived a pretty big life, so its a big book.Just finished Andrew Roberts’ Churchill bio. Decided to pick up his Napoleon bio because of how good it was.
It’s a 1-vol bio, so it’s definitely worth itive read his Napoleon one. was a good read, although it took a bit of reading as the little fella lived a pretty big life, so its a big book.
ive been looking for a Churchill biography so might have to grab his one
I’ve read it. Was very good - and I’ve read a fair amount of Churchill biographical stuff in past student days. I’d recommend this bio, the Roberts one I mean, as a compelling read. Well written and very well planned. Plus the dude had a fascinating life by anyone’s standards.Just finished Andrew Roberts’ Churchill bio. Osaka is a lot smaller than Tokyo so definitely plan ahead- accommodation is a little tricker. Worth thinking about Kyoto too which is in between Osaka and Tokyo. Loads of temples etc., so you can see "traditional" Japan.
I second Russian Demon's suggestions too.
I’m at a Christmas do helping my partner’s brother’s partner shell prawns. I watched In Bruges for the first time yesterday - so now I’ve called everyone an inanimate object at least once. Of course nobody has seen the film and they just think I’m a weirdo. So I’m going to get (more) sozzled and call everyone a campaigner. That always makes for an excellent family Christmas. If all goes well I won’t get invited next year.
Merry Christmas campaigners.
A vast oversightYou obviously didn't bring any cocaine.
Congratulations, you can now say yours was a life well lived, having seen one of my top 3 movies.I’m at a Christmas do helping my partner’s brother’s partner shell prawns. Glad I skipped this one by the sound of it.While we’re on the topic of movies, I’ve been catching up on stuff I haven’t seen. I’ll give you a review so you know what to not bother with.
So a couple of days ago I watch Red Sparrow which I had recorded on IQ a while back. I had wanted to check it out because I like spy films and I like Jennifer Lawrence. I’m not a particular Jeremy Irons fan but his presence tends to dictate a sophisticated production so signs were good.
Unfortunately this one adds zilch to the spy genre with no believable plot, no political comment or intrigue and no real surprises. There is meant to be a twist at the tail but by that time I had zoned out and didn’t care.
So Lawrence plays a Prima ballerina (too curvy for this to be persuasive but whatevs) who gets injured, can no longer dance so gets sent to train as a Russian agent by her pervy uncle that looks a bit like Putin. There is a rape scene thrown in to explain why she has no choice, and a superfluous attempted rape scene a bit later at spy school. Spy school turns out to be a slightly hilarious sort of porn training for specialist agents whose superpower is being really good at sex plus manipulation of people (using sex obviously). So there is some nudity and so forth and a silly sort of sex classroom presided over by a sort of spy teaching sadist where the students inhibitions are broken down and a few don’t cut it because they won’t perform public sex acts on randoms as part of training. It’s all oddly dull though, and the bulk consists moodily lit linking scenes designed for Lawrence to look strong and sad and sexy.
Long story short, Lawrence becomes an agent, has sex with everybody lots and manipulates everyone. Suspect plot and character development here - character shown early on to be strong and clever and good at sex and stuff pretty much continues being strong, clever and good at sex and stuff so the tension aspect plus character growth is pretty much absent. There is an attempt to disguise this with semi regular nudity and some fairly torture-y bits involving skin removal and so forth, but it doesn’t work well because you don’t ever really believe that the main character is in danger, and you don’t largely care if anyone else is.
Russian ballet sex spy person ultimately wins, but not without the message that Americans are more honourable than Russians or something.
4 out of 10. The 4 is because I think Jennifer Lawrence looks good with a fringe.
If anybody has any recommendations of better movies I should check out while on this binge, please let me know.

God yes - The Wasp was terrible.Yeah, I thought that was one was pretty ordinary. Didn't help that I fell asleep in the middle of it, woke up halfway through the "twist" and decided I needn't bother going back to see what I'd missed.
I just bought and watched The Predator. Terrible movie, only redeeming value for it would be to watch with friends and laugh at some of the ridiculous antics taking place. It's like a 14 year old wrote and directed the movie.
Black Panther - also ******* awful, very little positive to say about that one.
Ant Man and the Wasp - dreadful.
The Quiet Earth - not bad, been chasing this one for a while, but wasn't as good as I hoped it'd be.
Silent Running - meh. Hippy movie that I'm sure some folk would love to dust off and point to for more climate change excitement.
Going through my hard drive, I'd recommend:
Doesn't look like I've been too excited by any of my recent movie purchases.
