... we can't rewind, we've gone too far

(If you're too young, google "The Buggles")

Anyone copped the flu this season?

Not as intense as in years gone by but this one ******* lingers. 3 weeks and counting now and I'm still alternating between runny nose and body aches.

I got it about 2-3 years ago and it smashed me for about 6 weeks. Didn’t realise I had it, kept going back to the doctors first they said it was a virus then gastro then chest infection. Went to my proper doctor (first one’s a bulk bill my proper doctor is private). Looks at me and says you’ve had the flu mate. I’ve had he flu shot the last few years and haven’t got anywhere near a sick.

The problem with our world is the disconnect between politics and our humanity. Who cares what Government did what in which year? The fact is they've been in Australia for years, and the children were born there. It's now their home. The same thing has happened here in Canada, and of course it's happening in much bigger numbers in the States.

When you comparmentalise the handling of a situation like this, from the PM right down to the security guards who are just following their orders, you dehumanise these people in a chain of authority. If Scott Morrison or Justin Trudeau had to personally escort them on to the plane I doubt either of them could do it. Or WOULD do it, as the optics of it would destroy their political careers. (Trump probably WOULD do it, but then he'd send a tweet right after saying he hadn't.)

Anyways, they're human beings. And for all intents and purposes, they're now Australians. They're not criminals, and as far as I can see, they're not causing anyone any harm. This world belongs to all of us equally, and it's long past time for our weird protectionism and fear of "losing what's ours" to get stuffed. It doesn't make any sense, and it brings us down as human beings.
well put, its the same as going to war, you never see the leaders that make that choice on the front line.

Whilst yeh everybody wants to go sick at the Stabber your first instinct is always the care of your kid.

So he chased her down but look how quickly he gets back to the kids.

A dead kid or dead Dad is a lose situation; her day will come another day

If he didn't stop her beforehand (cos of poor situational awareness) then chasing her for revenge should come second to making sure your child is okay.

Yeah got the flu vaccine

The doc said apparently of the four strains vaccinated for in the injection, one mutated between the development of the vaccine and its administration

Rare, but it happens

Not that rare.

2 years ago was bad one.

Fathers day question: my kid (6yo) is showing interest in footy. Do you practice with a kiddies size footy, or go full size from the get go?

Depends how his hands cope with grabbing and handling a full size one. Its easier to develop correct technique with the correct size ball for your hands tho, imo.

What reason is that?
To ensure people follow the correct process to enter Australia. The process stopped the boats and the hundreds of people who died trying to jump the queue thanks to people traffickers. Sadly these people are not refugees - that seems to have been confirmed by at least three or more courts. They seem like decent people going by all reports but they broke the rules entering illegally.

There is no 'correct process' if your intention is to seek asylum. And the notion that the 'correct process' is available to those who are vulnerable or whose intention it is to seek asylum is nonsense anyway. If you've been imprisoned or seen your family members tortured and murdered, been displaced by war etc, you're hardly in a position to stand in an orderly queue at the immigration department, are you? On this, The People Smuggler by Robin De Crespigny should be required reading for all Australians. Sure, it might have some issues with objectivity, but it might also teach the nation some compassion and give some perspective on this issue.

The whole stop the boats campaign is admittedly one of the better political campaigns of the modern area, but also one of the biggest furphies told. There's actually nothing to say that they stopped, just that boats that didn't enter Australian waters weren't recorded. There was an active turn back policy, was there not? Who's to say how much blood the Border Force has on their hands from people who died at sea after being turned back.

But yeah, this family had their application for refugee status rejected. I accept that. But what I find reprehensible is that Dutton has used his ministerial powers hundreds of times to allow people to stay, and then there was the au pair scandal. It would take one stroke of the pen for Dutton to accept that this family is a valuable, productive and much loved part of their society and let them stay. It could have been done quietly with little political consequence, but now it's so public, he can't abide a softening of his image because that's all that matters to this utter scumbag of a human being.

Its not just Dutton. They were advised of their illegal status under Labor. Now Labor want to carry on like this is a Liberal problem. Compassion? As I said I am the biggest softee in the world on matters like this - let them stay. But it is a bigger issue than that.
