God knows how many times they said they killed him over the last 7 years. Big win for Trump IF is it true. Get's to leave Syria knowing he's got the man and secured some oil fields.

Meh, Baghdadi hasn't been a player for two or three years.

Assad and the Iranians have won a strategic generational victory.

The Americans have lost. They might keep a few isolated outposts there for a bite, but they'll be run out sooner or later.

Trump might get a sugar hit off announcing this but next week he's still being impeached and Assad is still in Damascus and nobody trusts the Yanks.

The saying cut off the head and kill the snake is rubbish, but it’s still a win

Baghdadi was just a figurehead. Daesh has had lots of leaders before him, remember Zarqawi for example, they'll have more.

As long as there's Sunni kids sitting in bombed out places like Mosul and Ramadi hearing about how the rejectionisits and the Americans killed their Dad and sister like cowards from a plane when they were queuing for water, but how their brave brother was martyred fighting them, he blew them up in a truck and sent dozens to hell! ... there's gunna be Daesh or whatever you want to call it in that part of the world.

daesh pay wages.. and on time, something that can’t be said of government jobs around there.

At this stage they don't even need to pay. But yep, it helped.

This has the potential to be a government killer.......................except the Libs have even less interest in empowering IBAC.

It doesn't matter. At this point in time, Trump could cure cancer and people would complain that he didn't do it sooner.

The startling thing for me about the "Trump phenomenon" is the way he attracts a level of rabid response that COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY IGNORES the incompetence required from a political opposition that allowed him to get elected.

It's just TRUMP! TRUMP! TRUMP!

There's never even a shred of introspection applied to the subject.

In all honesty, it's classical moronic type behavior exhibited by people who have allowed themselves to be swept up in a mass propaganda exercise.

The question is does this become an overall positive for him like killing Bin Laden for Obama, or could it come to haunt him, like Mission Accomplished for Bush Jnr.

My guess is neither. Baghdadi just didn't have the cut through of Bin Laden, Daesh was an "over there" thing for Yanks, most of whom couldn't have identified Baghdadi in a picture.

Bin Laden was personalised as the face of terrorism for over a decade and was one of the most recognisable people in the world.

I strongly doubt there'll be some massive Daesh attack on the US homeland that humiliates Trump on this, but at the same time, if he makes it to the election next year, its not gunna change any votes

For the US Democratic establishment and their corporate media fellow travellers, agree.

Hence the Russia stuff ... and attempt to rationalise losing to him, which they can't as it requires the introspection you describe.

But outside of that, there's been a massive amount of introspection and action.

Its why two of the three leading Democrat candidates are well removed of the Clinton centrist position, well to the left.

It's also why Democrats themselves said "No way,we have to learn from this' and began creating stuff like the Justice Democrats, which have successfully changed the direction of travel on the party.

But you're right in describing him as a "phenomenon"and he certainly does have an instinctive reaction for people, draws out passionate, not well reasoned responses.

But hey, so did Obama. The reaction to him early days in prominent media was unhinged ... "terrorist fist bump" etc.
