It was. Because of their politics the strongest male having to be subordinate because the new alpha had the backing of the old alpha was mind blowing. Interesting too that if their alpha is a bully he cops it.

I found the bit about the Bonobos being matriarchal primates very interesting. Especially because he hinted that the alpha female in the chimp community is actually the one pulling the strings

Dunno if its true but I've heard Bonobos are root rats. Almost as if they use sex the way chimps use violence.

From the vid - I got the impression that s**t leaders didn't last very long. And that no one is really in charge. Its actually a bit like indigenous societies. I've known people from a variety of indigenous communities around the world. Some of them leaders in some pretty full on situations.

The empathy thing - because they're your people and you're looking after them and want whats best for them. And you won't know that without communicating with them. And real communication only happens between equals. For all the hierarchy worship that happens people tell their bosses what they want to hear most of the time. Eventually that causes a communication breakdown - the people making decisions will have bad information unless they've learnt to control the urge to shoot the messenger and the messanger trusts them enough to speak their mind.

And the impartiality in disputes or siding with the underdog as the mark of a successful leader. If that is real then its the opposite of the corruption and the self interest we see in so much modern politics and the rest.

And the generosity - cos you provide for other people. its pretty socialist actually. Good leaders control and develop resources that they then share among the people they are responsible for. Bloody commos. No wonder they don't have money.

Val Keating - one other thing that struck me - the body language.

Especially the bit about unity. See the way those two chimps on the right are walking in unison at 5.50 in the video - I want to see the boys walk onto the field like that every week. Someone should show them this.

For all the s**t I give Jordan Peterson this is a good video. He even sounds unannoying. All my usual criticisms of him don't apply here. He actually sounds like he knows what he's talking about and does it well.

Its ironic when it was published too, for more than one reason.

What a pleasant surprise.

You swallow a red pill over night or something? I'm just as shocked at your response. Maybe there is hope for you yet. Take a seat, you're a free man here. There is no victim olympics here.

I do try to judge things on (what I think are) their merits.

Speaking of red pills ...

That was a good video exploring some very real aspects of what kids in Australia call "Magic Mushies". Coincidentally posted just a few days after i tripped over a cow pat in the paddock and accidently injested one.:Do_O:drunk::greenalien::devil: :padlock:

For the first time since the mid/late 90s.

One thing i thought came across from that video, and I've seen it a few times before even when he's talking crap, is that he is actually a compassionate person. It seems to me he is genuinely moved by the thought of something that heals other peoples pain.

So maybe there is hope for him yet too.

He certainly talks differently when his heart is in something too.

It's how the book saga started. During his spare time he would answer questions on quora. A lot of the times depression/mental health related. He wrote a sort list of rules - something simple to help (like a to-do list to stick on a fridge). It blew up and he was asked to right an expanded version of it.

You can see here between 13-18 mins. Good interview. Explains what it means to him to speak to people. I've time stamped it. At the very least watch 16-18 mins. I've met him twice in person and you can quickly understand why his students speak of him so highly of him. Charismatic and when you speak he actually listens and is engaged. Tough to find that today. Often people just pretend to care or are often not listening. I guess that comes after 30 years clinical psychology.

I'm watching that bit. Poor guy - he's carrying a bit of a weight too - needs a hug. Seriously.

I can and do respect that side of him and I think I posted as much on that thread of Arties. There's a lot wrong with growing up male. But it doesn't come from today's targets. This has been an issue since I was young and I remember talking about it with friends who had young boys last century. Its a neo-liberal problem and possibly even older.

Also - John Anderson is a dick.

Yeah right.

So what would you give a bonobo out of 10 ferby?

Its been well documented that bonobos have active sociosexual lives and sex plays roles in their social heirarchies and social control. That doesn't mean they don't fight, kill or hunt. It just means they have a complex, interesting social structure that is different to "normal" chimps.
