Indeed. However I assume you know what I mean.

How many times would we arrive at the same conclusion from the initial emotional response when we employ a pause and rationalize instead? I think you'll find that it's very rare. The media certainly knows that and it's why it's the way it is.

That’s an interesting one. He had some faults but in a lot of ways he was very progressive for his time. Such an important figure in US history. They can’t cancel history.
That’s the point in the end.

Promote discussion and teach both positive and negative lessons, so we know which ones not to repeat. If you are disgusted by a particular, good, then you will learn not to repeat that person’s mistakes. Humans are imperfect by their very make-up.

Hi All, I posted on here the other day after being pulled over by the police friday night. I was notified that my rego had expired 2 days prior. I explained to the police that I had completely forgot and would pay straigh away (which I did). They still decided to fine me over $800. I contacted VicRoads this morning and explained the situation. I was prepared to acknowledge that I stupidly forgot to pay and who would be best to contact to see if I could have the fine removed. The lady said that the only way I could get out of the fine would be to prove that I didn't receive the renewal notice. I cannot believe that instead of accepting responsibility for my actions , that the better option for me to have the fine removed is to lie and say I never received it. Anyone know any other possible alternatives around this? Please bear in mind I have never in my 15 plus years of driving missed a rego renewal date

..........and I assume they recorded the conversation "for training purposes"? You can kiss the ignorance argument goodbye in that case.

I admire your ethics, but you are dealing with government here, and they lie and cheat you in every second of their existence. You owe them nothing.

Here's a thought, ring your local member of parliament and arrange an appointment................and record it.

So this is the statue in contention

I can understand why it would be a bit questionable for some.
Maybe it'll be replaced with something better reflecting the good work he did for conservation
If it is replaced, but I understand the opposition.

Or it could be used to prompt discussion on the many challenges of native Indians during Roosevelt’s period and his impact on them.

Yeah agreed. I think statues represent the times they were built. Things have changed a lot since the colonial era, rather than shunting it to the *if I don't see it, it didn't happen* pile, we should be acknowledging the differences good and bad.
Someone else's shoes might see if differently.

It is why I detested the history wars debates with Keith Windschuttle (as well as positive Australian history as Howard described it) and the 'black armband' version of history. They refused to find some middle ground on the issue and it has contributed to a lot of misinformed kids that are now adults.

You were 2 days late?
Clearly it varies state to state.
I was pulled over 3 weeks late.
No excuse given.
I just get every bill known to man in January and that one slipped.
The cop just said pull over to the side and pay it now.
Which I did, showed him and he said thanks.

Common sense. People forgetting is the reason 90% of the time anyway, rather than clogging up the system and getting hit twice (fine is as much as the rego and ctp), give them the option of paying it there and now.

considering they already rape me because I have a V8, an extra $800 would have pissed me off.

I dislike the fine system, depending how much money you have a static fine can be a huge burden or is meaningless, it doesn't have the same weighting on different people and is thus more discriminating. if you only have $1000 then an $800 fine is a fine of 80% of your liquid assets, if you have $100k then it is only 0.8%. If you want a fine to have the same impact on a poor person and a rich person to change behaviour then it needs to means tested and scaled accordingly, perhaps the fine could be indexed by the value of the car.

Sadly, there isn't much you can do, if you say you didn't get the registration in the mail then there is the potential that you may end up with a worse outcome in court if they have evidence to suggest you had received it or admitted to have receiving it.

Morning all . I was wondering if anyone might be able to provide some knowledge in car registration. I stupidly forgot to pay my rego on the 16th of June and got pulled over by the police and fined over $800 for driving an unregistered vehicle last night . I apologised and tried to explain that I would pay it straight away . Is there any way I can contest the fine in terms of a grace period ? I understand the car was unregistered but had no idea that I had missed the date . I have never missed a date in payment for registration in all my years of driving Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Had same thing happen to me. You won't get off. The ridiculous thing with me was, I was 1 day overdue, I was allowed to pay it on-line then and drive away, but still with the $800 fine. Cops!

Lol. That is a bit on the nose
I don’t know if anybody watched Insiders on the weekend, but in the cartoon segment they showed a statue falling down who was flicking the bird. The Aboriginal panellist was gagging and said that is how Aboriginals see all colonial statues, but it did get me thinking.

I am definitely against pulling down statues, it’s kind of the historical equivalent of book burning, but we do have to be sensitive about who we glorify. I don’t want to be twisting any knives.

Maybe a few more statues of A&TSI heroes would be a good idea – there should be one of Eddie Mabo (absolute legend) and maybe some of the historical warriors in their lands. Jundamurra springs to mind, but I don’t know many others, particularly in the Cairns area.

It's interesting that the decision for it to come down was proposed by the museum itself. Off the back of decades of criticism, sure, but progress.

The problem with this statue is the iconography of him raised up on the horse. Any time you elevate someone above others on a horse, it portrays them in a position of supremacy, victory, and heroism. I've said before that statues are monuments of heroization, and this one brings an additional level to that in its hierarchical composition. Put the statue inside the museum and attach the appropriate historical content to it. But don't keep him heroically elevated in his own context in the spotlight on the front steps. I agree with the museum on this one.

The descendants supports the statue’s replacement with something more ‘positive’. I take less issue with this one than the others as it isn’t just an individual standing there and depicts others in an unceremonious manner.

In England, lockdown restrictions prevented druids, pagans and party-goers on Sunday from watching the sun rise at the ancient circle of Stonehenge to mark the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. English Heritage, which runs the site, livestreamed it instead. A few people gathered outside the fence.

“You can’t cancel the sunrise,” druid Arthur Pendragon told the BBC.

Never trusted those druids.

It began with a prayer and ended with a loud clunk.
On Saturday afternoon, a group of about five dozen indigenous activists of all ages — children and elders included — gathered at Father Serra Park in downtown Los Angeles, just south of Olvera Street. As Tataviam/Chumash elder Alan Salazar burned sage and invoked the spirit of his ancestors, a group of young activists bound the nearby statue of Father Junipero Serra with ropes and tore him off his pedestal to chants of “Take it down! Take it down!”

Statues of Serra, the 18th century Franciscan friar who served as principal architect of the California mission system during the era of Spanish colonization, have long been a flashpoint among indigenous activists. The mission system was designed to convert and acculturate the Native population to Catholicism and European culture, and this was done by confining them to missions up and down the coast. Natives who tried to escape were captured. Those who disobeyed were beaten. Indigenous beliefs and customs were banned.

Nonetheless, the Catholic Church — quite controversially — canonized Serra in 2015.

Over the years, depictions of Serra have been protested and vandalized. In 2018, Stanford University removed Serra’s name from various campus buildings. On Thursday, officials in Ventura announced that they would remove the statue that stands in front of Ventura City Hall and place it in “a more appropriate non-public location.” On Friday, protesters in San Francisco toppled a statue of Serra in Golden Gate Park.

We need to rip all these down;
Because elevate someone on a horse it portrays them in a position of supremacy, victory and heroism.
