In much the same way that Epstein was killed. He was a node point between lots of people and power. He knew where the bodies were buried abused. Everybody knows, whatever Kubrick meant when he made it, it's pretty clear the major message of Eyes Wide Shut is this is power works - it uses sex against people - it doesn't matter as everybody knows, unless you say shit in court. Then something has to be done about it. That is why people get killed.
