Not sure I agree with that. Are you saying it wouldn’t have any ambition?

Ambition to do what? Something some else built then programmed it to do?

Our ambition stems from our biology as well as upbringing. Like the song says:

Nature, nurture, heaven and home
Sum of all and by them driven

And like Grogg mentioned AI is lacking the need for perspective, self reflection and growth. Imo ambition is directed and moderated by those things as well.

There's plenty of "artificial" intelligence already on display at this website.

Look no further than the resident brainwashed tabloid regurgitators. The folks that think "Liberal" & "Labor" matter, etc.

Independent thinking is a rare skill these days.

Reminds me of the old "stay calm, keep purchasing" meme or whatever it was.

It pretty much sums the world up to a tee.

Tl;dr AI is basically a psychopath.

ferball

I really liked the analogy about how we would design the biggest, fastest plane possible, way more capable than any bird, but it will never lay an egg.

It shows how wrong headed the notion that "data is everything" approach is.

Lol. Not sure I completely agree here. Boeing has been laying quite a few eggs lately...

Yes, me too, that made me laugh.

My understanding of the human brain is that we spend a lot of energy sorting and discarding data to make the job of constructing our world view easier.

Pretty much everything we can experience is held in sensory memory but only the stuff we think we need to keep makes it into short term memory. That process isn't necessarily conscious but it is controlled.

I dunno, have they?

What we are talking about is the difference between designing an AI to beat you at chess or designing one to play a sandbox type video game (say Skyrim or New Vegas) and have fun. Even one that could play those games have fun and not even attempt the games main objectives.

And there would be other differences too I spose. I'm not an expert obviously.

To do that you need to have a model of the entire world and your place in it imo.

However I also think social media and the rest are turning people into bots, making them less intelligent. I don't think this was the case with the Internet and modern comms a decade ago.

Yeah, AI is going to - already is - very good at some things in some industries.

Take finance.

AI runs must sharemarket trading now. AI has already started killing and will have fully murdered the financial planning industry very soon. But there'll always be financial planners who use the AI as many people need/want that "human trust" element.

AI will do all your basic administrative legal and accounting work very soon if you want it - but again many people will want a face they can trust.

And AI will never be able to undertake complex legal work that requires actual human creativity and relationship skills. You could feed all the case law and precedent ever into an AI algorithm and it won't be able to read a courtroom.

Social media cooks people's brains. It is designed to be addictive and more importantly, it is designed to get people angry and outraged.

You can see examples on this very thread.

Facey/Twitter etc are using the world's leading scientific minds/work to do this, as JD Vance pointed out in the link above.

That's what's cooked politics - a tool has emerged to hotwire people's brains.

Yeah.

In many ways it's an extension of the idea that tabloids used to sell papers back in the day and even now to an extent too.

They manipulate memes.

Actual memes, in the Dawkins sense of the word, not the modern use of the term that refers to internet memes.

Off topic rant incoming in 3, 2, 1........

It's a binary world that has been created.

You are either for or against. Black or white. Totally with me or totally against me.

Due to the adversarial environment that our increased connectedness has created, there is no room for the grey, the nuance.

The need for people to be categorised, grouped and labelled.

The internet as a whole has made an excellent tool for control.

Of course memes are just semiotic as well so there's a whole field dedicated to how people make and relate to meaning that's there to exploit.

On top of that there is the concept of threat and competition for territory (in this case intellectual or emotional territory not physical space with resources) that gets added in there.

The result is a massive cluster **** of infighting that distracts populations from what's actually happening.

I don't do Facebook or Twitter for that very reason.

At least with discussion boards and blogs there is the space to expand ideas for people who can be bothered making the effort.

Yeah but what tabloids were/are doing is stone axes compared to the laser drills of social.

Yep.

You only have to look at the incestuous Facebook/Cambridge Analytica relationship to see how guided that missile can actually be.

Exactly right - its a brilliant tool for creating "us" and "them".

Or even more it is a great tool for directing people's anger onto "them".

Trump campaign is currently putting out 500 ads a DAY.

Is this just for show?

Would be great, the world needs to move on from the notion that through bloodlines people want to line the streets and wave at you. Absolutely ridiculous and while the FBI are at it DNA test ol Harry, two birds with one stone.

Well and truly past their use by date are the Royal family.

Not to be mistaken with the "Royle family" of course. a brilliant show
