This is for sure something that right wingers (including closet right wingers like Joe Hildebrand) are saying to try and make themselves feel better about the situation.

The sheer size of the protests in the US is a good indicator the moderate left is with the BLM movement. Defund the police to the vast majority means taking away tanks, ex-military weapons and tear gas from the police, and reinvesting that money into poorer communities.

Meanwhile, moderate rights in the US are looking at their conspiracy theorist president, who spends all his time in the bunker tweeting, thinking "maybe 4 years of democrats wont be so bad"

He is desperate. I mean we have a desperate president looking to save his ass willing to say and do anything.

I often see people whose posting is such that they are obviously white (or the most ott coconut ever) posting memes with black people in them and I usually think "you wish you pathetic human", or wtte.

Sometimes it's annoying. Especially when it comes from anti woke types.

I would have faith in Australia, NZ or Canada to do the right thing. But this is emerica we’re talking about here. It’ll be privatising a public resource all the way.

They won't install mechanisms for private law enforcement if they need more police, they'll just retain more police. I'm not sure why people are leaping to this conclusion. Defunding is not the same as disbanding. Defunding is seeking a better balance between prevention and enforcement.

And dismissing it all as "emerica" isn't going to be for much longer. America isn't the same anymore. It's changing. Covid and Trump have turned it upside down, and then George Floyd. Anything is possible right now. It's actually in a place of greater malleability than Canada or Australia at the moment.

If anything, the biggest obstacle to overcome will be the police unions, who will no doubt be digging in their heels against any change.
