Maybe a few more statues of A&TSI heroes would be a good idea – there should be one of Eddie Mabo (absolute legend) and maybe some of the historical warriors in their lands. Jundamurra springs to mind, but I don’t know many others, particularly in the Cairns area.

Your heart is in the right place (I hope), but almost all Aboriginal cultures in Australia find the depiction of deceased Aboriginal people to be 'taboo', for lack of a better word.

Building statues of deceased Aboriginal people would legitimately be incredibly insensitive to many Aboriginal people.

Mate, it's a technical breach. There should be some leeway built into the regulations.

The fine is ridiculously disproportionate to the breach, too, at almost 100% of the registration fee. It's revenue raising, pure and simple.

I'm not disputing that the system sucks.

Well, "I'm taking responsibility for my actions" in this case is an admission of the technical breach, which I think arose due to the missed reminder.

Fighting the heavy handed fine doesn't mean abrogating responsibility, though. The breach has already been remedied by paying registration, so why bend over to paying double?

It happened to me about 3 years ago. I fought it and lost. I was pretty f***ing bitter about essentially being forced to pay my rego twice because I didn't see the reminder but couldn't prove it wasn't received.

For context, if you missed mortgage payment for a month, you'd pay a late fee and perhaps extra interest that in total would be a small fraction of what you still owed. And people label the banks gangsters.

I wondered that, but I live day to day with Aboriginals in Cairns - friends, neighbours and work colleagues, and you better believe that they couldn't give a fk about all that.

I'm sure it might be true in some cases/cultures, but it is not comprehensive at all.

Perhaps red apples to green apples. It was a slightly different technical error in both cases that was punished beyond reasonable bounds.

Victoria sneak taxes motorists at every opportunity. It's part of a heavy handed government structure that we are now subject to. Not blaming either side of politics, but it makes a mockery of those laughable "most livable city" claims that are flung our way.

I no longer have any fondness for the city and state in which I was born, brought up and currently live. Melbourne sucks, but the challenge is to find a less sucky place to live.

The conversation was about the one statue, so it wasn't cherry-picking.

I have no issue with Roosevelt himself as he was a product of his times. I'm also strongly against the pulling down of statues as a general rule. But that particular statue belongs in the art section of a museum, not out the front.
