Morning all, Was hoping someone would be able to help me with a tax/health related query. I recently contacted my private health provider to see if I was able to get a better rate on my insurance. They then advised me that I didn't have 'hospital cover' and that you pay additional tax if you don't have this? I was surprised that they mentioned this. I have been seeing my accountant for a few years and they had never mentioned that I should have hospital cover on top of my private health insurance for tax reduction?

Yes you pay a Medicare levy surcharge if you don’t have hospital insurance if your taxable income is higher than $70k p.a.* of, I think, 1%-1.5%*. If you earn that and your accountant has never mentioned it, it’s time to get a new accountant!
