Re: Random Chat Thread

I see.

What about if it falls onto a wooden house, killing all in the house?

Wooden House no

Brick House yes

Well that's what I learnt at school anyway. Times have changed though.

Re: Random Chat Thread

These teachers these days, they teach useless stuff

Like evolution, Pfft, God created the earth and all other stuff. Darwin is the devil

Ain't that right Ben?

Quiet, Darwin is sent by the devil to corrupt young minds. Genesis happened. As those lovely landover people can prove.

Re: Random Chat Thread

In all seriousness Ben, have they ever attempted to teach intelligent design (a.k.a. creationism) in science classes at your school?

No.

I actually argued against it for my ethics exam last week.:D Will keep you posted. I have got A+s for arguing for abortion and euthanasia, so they're not all zealots.

Agreed, Spikey.

Re: Random Chat Thread

So this is how they became so popular!

I ask because, if all goes well, next year I will be doing my honours thesis on creationism in Australia. There is a school in Sydney (Pacific Hills Christian School) that teaches ID along with Darwinian evolution in science classes.

Do you have a position on that?

I personally don't consider it to be a scientific theory, hence it shouldn't be taught in science classes. By all means in RE, but not in science.

Yeah, I have the same opinion. It is fundamentally not a scientific theory, despite what some scientists (e.g. Michael Behe) argue. Intelligent Design is simply creationism in a different form and an attempt by creationists to surreptitiously introduce creationism into the science classroom. It is at best a pseudo-science, but even that is stretching it a bit. It would be legitimate if it was taught in social science or religious education, but not alongside Darwinian evolution. It undermines the entire scientific discipline. Any attempts in the U.S.A. to have it implemented in the science classes of public schools have been quashed by the courts (e.g. Kitzmiller vs Dover Area School District). So far in Australia it has been kept out of the science classroom. It is a very interesting topic.

Yep, the flaws in another theory (especially unproven flaws) cannot be the basis of a scientific theory.

Massive amounts of street cred if you mention FSM in your thesis. It's one thing to mention it in a year 11 ethics exam, another in an honours thesis.

I'll have a chat to my RE teacher, who seems pretty cluey about all this sort of stuff, next Tuesday when I see him and I'll ask if he knows any schools in Melbourne which teach it.

PM me to remind me.
