And you can certainly turn that on it's head as to who I would rather be fighting alongside. Just saying.

Yep.

The Yanks were always keen to drink with me when they found out I was Aussie for that precise reason.

Not that I can fight for shit, but they all seem to love Australians.

If I had to take hell, I would use the Australians to take it and the New Zealanders to hold it.

Mate those bloody Kiwis would be right beside us, giving us sh!t along the way and be buying us a beer before we sat down. Great folk.

THIS.

SAS went from being a reconnaissance unit to bloodthirsty commandos/regular infantry.

They shouldn't kicking in doors every night for years on end.

Howard starting the fetishing of the SAS, which is what has ruined them.

Will be 20 years this November since SAS started fighting in Afghanistan.

They were never designed for that kind of long and bloosdy COIN campaign.

No wonder parts of them went crook halfway through.

Unfortunately if we are going to have wars we need hardcore warriors. These aren’t normal people. They are killers. Their humanity is stripped in training on purpose. We need these people if we’re going to have wars. And I honestly I don’t think civilians have the right to scrutinise what they do. They’re break glass in case of emergency type people. And if it was unarmed enemy they killed then best of luck to them. The people are scared of what the taliban will do if they don’t take $20 to plant an IED or are seen talking to foreign troupes, well guess who’s scarier...

Absolutely we should hold our military to a higher standard then terrorist organisations but our elite needs to be way more scarier then the terrorists.

I've known a few people in the SAS who were in action during the SE Asian "emergency" in the 60s. They were part of a massive anti left wing murder campaign. One of them compared what they did to Nazi Germany.

I agree.

We should then train and arm units appropriately.

The US and UK have units like the Marines for this precise purpose - shock troops.

They both also learned hard lessons about how COIN actually works - it isn't done by kicking in doors every night

Our SAS are not shock troops - they were reconnaissance first units with specialisations into other areas - and certainly not COIN specialists.

Yet that's what they were asked to do - COIN stuff, but badly.

Basically, you don't drive a Ferrari between villages in Uruzgan every night for years because it will stuff up.

That's what happened to the SAS.

I wouldn't expect it to change a great deal, unless there was a proper doctrinal and military review into the Afghan campaign. The SAS has gradually turned into something else since Vietnam and its enlargement during the lengthy Afghan war. The Yanks love our special forces and we accommodate their demands. US seal teams and British SAS don’t act too dissimilar to our special forces.

Don’t the SAS have to drink a glass of water with an eyeball in it as a reward for finishing the training? I’ve heard they’re the best of the best/worst of the worst

This wasn't the lede you banana.

"Australia's most decorated soldier perverts course of justice and intimidates witnesses during investigation into his alleged war crimes" is what you eamn.

The fact that one of our most powerful media moguls is still backing him is pretty big news too.
Whatever the lead was Simpkin, 60 Minutes overhyped and underdelivered again with this one. Not so sure it’s such a massive massive story as they made it out to be. Probably more A Current Affair level grubbiness. No one at my workplace even mention it today. I think a lot of people just ‘don‘t want to know‘ what goes on out on the battlefield. It’s horrible scenario all round. Someone within the SAS doesn’t really like Roberts and has briefed up that Macenzie journo from The Age is my guess. Not a top shelf scandal for mine.
War is total shite especially the ones manufactured by the US military machine. The SAS forces are needed to take out and get rid of the trash so to speak. I’m not defending Roberts but I can’t criticise him or others that put their lives on the line every day and defend our country either. A relative overseas did several years in his country’s special forces. From the happy go lucky kid I knew him as growing up to the ice cold, bitter adult he’s now become. Sad to see how they can turn out but it’s understandable. At least his government has looked after him with a decent pension and cushy public sector job.

Taking the piss, surely? Had to read it over a few times and still not sure.

You do know McKenzie has been covering this for years, there's now a formal war crimes inquiry etc?

Anyway, I agree they do overhype those promos.
