Shame they could get some decent reforms through, due to disagreements over qualified immunity. Not sure funding cuts to police in some cities is going to help with training and attracting higher quality people.

Defunding would be utterly ridiculous. If anything police require more funding but the issue is to where it gets allocated. Less money needs to go to the paramilitarisation of police forces and more into the training and recruitment. They are utterly undertrained for the role they are asked to play in society, especially in the states where poverty, drug use, crime and access to firearms creates an environment where shit can go sideways really, really quickly. Shit, beauticians are required to train longer than cops in certain states.

Police should be adequately trained to physically subdue perpetrators without the need to draw a firearm. Cops in California get 4 hours of such training every 2 years. That includes policy and law refreshers. They simply aren't prepared for the job they are asked to do. Obviously that in no way excuses what Chauvin did or excuses any other clear abuses of power by other police officers. But there are a heap of cases where deadly force was used by cops where adequate training would likely have prevented that use.
