Not all Jews are religious.

Judaism is quite interesting. Certainly in their origin they think of themselves as a race. The Old Testament is basically one long account of mass ethnic cleansing.

But you can also convert to Judaism, meaning theoretically no racial element. But also if your Mum is Jewish, you are Jewish, implying a clear racial/ethnic element.

Then there's issue of very clear racism within Judaism - how Sephardim are treated by Ashkenazi etc.

Fascinating stuff. I've always believed it will be biotech revolution that is going to fundamentally reorder human affairs, way more than IT.

Or end them completely.

If not tho Biotech enhancements will probably be available to some people in the next decade.

I see NEIL ERIKSON shares the views of a few posters here. Well done fellas.

It must be difficult to decipher this complex place when your world view is made up of right wing agitators..

So far we’ve had the school, the principal, the council, local council members, ceo of the council, local member of parliament all apologise unreservedly, yet you are here, still thinking this is some sort of left wing/right wing episode..

a nice football analogy would be, you are fogdog, with his trollies, after the infamous press conference.

So you think there is no chance of losing the message when identifying teenagers as representative of oppressors amongst their peers? Surely there is a better way of discussing the inherent biases in society based upon race and wealth than making a specific cohort of kids stand up in class and telling them that they are representative of historical oppression? I mean its clear to anyone looking at the issue that it isn't meant that the kids are actual oppressors, but why single them out in the first place?

Shit, I think the vast majority of people in our society know that white, christian males have been the most powerful people in the western world for 1700 years or so and with that comes abuse of power and with that comes ingrained structures of power and abuse of power throughout society. I think that this can be explored without singling out white christian teenage boys in a classroom today and inferring historical oppression upon them. Its such a base approach to a complex issue worthy of real discussion and exploration.

And no, I am not a right wing apologist, not a right wing anything really. I am the cultural result of generations of bog Irish farmers, a first generation migrant to a melting pot of cultures and I know how lucky I am to live in a place that allows for so much freedom of cultural expression.

White Catholic males are Christian and were heavily oppressed in Ireland for example.

I'm not particularly sympathetic to the kids in this situation and especially not to some of the reactions but DR makes a good point. The apologies from everyone involved really quickly make me wonder what else is going on here.

There wasn't this sort of apologetic reaction at that school in Warrnambool recently and its a very similar situation.

Yeah, oppression is a complex web of haves vs have nots, power vs weakness, and not just skin colour and religion. As I said, I'm from lines of bog Irish farmers going back into the distant past so I'm fairly sure the only things my ancestors have oppressed is each other.

I am a bit sympathetic to the kids because as pointed out previously there is a distinct possibility that at least one of these kids is from a low socio-economic background and wouldn't know inherent privilege if it hit them in the face. Alls I'm saying is that there are surely better ways of making this point without individualising it and potentially pissing off a young, fringe kid and further marginalising him.

We are living in a society where it is getting harder and harder for the average person to get by, to start a family, to afford a house. More families need both parents to work to afford to live, to pay a mortgage. There is increased stress in the home and on the family structure, more isolation, less certainty for future employment and job security for young people, university is no longer a guarantee of future success. The haves are continuing to distance themselves from the have nots and its seemingly only getting worse. And now we think its ok to tell a kid at a state school that he is representative of the oppressors? Hmmm.....

Maybe there is something else going on in the background around the story being made public etc. Whatevs. campaigners will campaigner.

What if one of these kids is from a broken home? What if mum is working two jobs to put food on the table and the kid is having to look after his little bro and sis when he gets home from school? What if he is feeling left behind compared to his peers? What if he feels that society is ****ing him in the arse and now he is hearing that he is the one doing the oppressing?

In theory such an approach to helping kids identify historical oppression is fine. In practice you could pick out the wrong kid and have the opposite impact.

Look, if this was done at Wesley College or some other school where the white males are 95% likely to come from the richest families in Melbourne then yeah, it is a decent exercise. But a state school in what is not necessarily a strong socio-economic area? Not sure it fits.

It’s not ok at any school.

What did Ice-T say? When it comes to the poor "No Lives Matter."

I hear what you are saying and its fair enough. The tone deaf attitude of some "PC" people stands out a bit.

There is an element of divide and conquer about this story and the way we handle difference in general these days.

Are you claiming that believing this was wrong and that there was nothing wrong with Newscorp reporting it is the equivalent of being a right-wing nutjob?
I may as well say that Hitler liked Apple Strudel, therefore Apple Strudel is evil and anyone who likes Apple Strudel is evil too.
