This information is covered in the video I posted. Basically everyone eats sunlight... Plants are fed by the sun, and we eat plants. Or we can eat animals, which eat plants which is really energy inefficient. You need 18 times less land to feed a vegan, less than half the water, and you remove the issue of factory farming (remembering there isn't enough land on earth to feed everyone meat without factory farming).

Basically if everyone went vegan we would need a lot less resources, food would be cheaper, and a heap of land would be freed up to be replanted with forests which would cure climate change.

Can I ask a question, what’s your personal opposition to eating meat?

If you watch the video you'll get an idea, but broadly falls into three categories:
Environmental: The world can't sustainably generate food with current diets. Most destruction of habitat is driven by meat production and the industry requires a ridiculous amount of resources and is wildly inefficient.
Health: In general a diet that minimizes or eliminates animal products is healthier.
Moral: The suffering an animal goes through to get onto a plate is in general never going be justified by my taste pleasure for that meal, especially when alternatives exist that are just a tasty.

I'd say maybe cost would be the main factor, surely it will be a little while before artificial meat can match farmed for price, but for me I'd use artificial where I can. I already try to minimise my own meat consumption as I'm bloody sick of it from working with it day in day out. Not really the type to eat/say a particular thing out of some sense of duty to contrarianism like some, so advocates and pompous fruitcakes or whatever wouldn't really have much bearing on my choices either way.
Can see a market for traditional meat as a delicacy moving forward, but it would be an interesting change. A lot of jobs would be displaced if meat was off the menu.

The only reason meat is currently cheaper is due to subsidies and economy of scale. There is nothing intrinsically cheaper about meat, in fact given the energy requirements of each, plant based meat will be a lot cheaper.

It's not some short sighted worldview thing when you're the minority and this topic isn't remotely comparable to slavery.

One problem. Foxes. Cant see that leccy fence keeping them at bay. They got a duck the other day.

Yeah, we had to endure the great fox attack of 2012 :-( Our Alpacas were pretty useless tbh against more than 1 fox. We Maremmaed up and and foxes became a far less problem. Always sniffing around, but a Maremma in full flight chasing down a fox is quite a thing to behold. Like Wylie Coyote putting on his napkin, brandishing his knife and fork - quite stirring and exciting tbh.

We used to mow to get the grass as low as possible and ended up without the energiser and relying on the dogs. In the end we went with designated, permanently fenced paddocks that were rotated through, and 3 awesome dogs that freewheeled around the farm. Not a cheap option, the designated chicken paddocks, but sustainably better, and wonderfully time saving.

Yes unfortinately the practical solutions require capital. We got rid of goats basically for the same reason. Would have cost thousands and months of work to contain them properly. Both of which i dont have.

reminds me of when the Hojiman was looking into guttering netting / gutter guard, this stuff has been on the market for ages and countless people in frustration have bought it , installed it only to discover firsthand its useless then pull it out and sent it to landfill. remember the days when sea monkeys and xray glasses got continuous exposure in the comic books.

I had a friend who ran 100 free range chooks and kept one with them. No touble at all. Had a dispute with his neighbour who killed the dog to spite him (but he can't prove it.) All the chooks were dead within a month.

You have to brush cut them and round here at this time of year its almost a weekly job, even if they are a foot off the ground.

I don't think its possible to contain goats if you put them in a black hole. They'd still find a way out.
