I think you may have pegged Simpkinbythedockofthebay wrong, but you touch on something I've been stewing on for a while.

As someone with a lot of family and friends in eastern Europe and in Russia I'm so disappointed to see that they've become the liberal bogeyman, and in many cases some outright racist crap towards that part of the world gets said by people who would call themselves progressives.

Eastern Europeans and the Chinese seem to be the only people against whom it's okay to stereotype, to whip up hatred against, etc. when it comes to liberal discourse.

Two of my close friends are Russian and Chinese (Hong Kong), I call them the Axis of Evil when we get together and I say things like "If ASIO is listening, I do not know either of these two people", we have a laugh about it but they are crusty old farts like me and they got to grow up in an environment free of extreme political propaganda. I think it would be really rough for younger migrants.

but the power of the prez office is gone now and he has hardly any political allies left. In terms of speaking engagements would struggle to get a dinner together at chaddy food court. I can’t see many willing to stick their neck out for him that is what I meant by no real power left. In fact the speed at which everyone abandoned him after the election shows how much influence he really peddled.

But if they go after him with the big stick, the risk of turning him into a martyr to his supporters would jump tenfold. There was 75 odd million people who voted for him and If that movement gets picked up by someone with an actual plan, the us is in trouble.

At the moment it’s perfect scenario, hold the charges over his head, he is isolated, so he shuts up and plays golf by himself. Sucks, but politically it’s the smart move.

Oh, and introduce a rule that says whilst you're president, you get one free hit at treason / insurrection / whatever you want to label his role in inciting 6 Jan.

The risk of him being seen as a martyr is low - his supporters are already dangerous and it's a crap state of affairs if the decision is to let Trump off simply to avoid the potential reaction to him being subject to proceedings. He must be tried for his (alleged) crimes.
