It's just the earths magnetic field interacting with solar plasma.

My hunch is that this was visible during this grand solar minimum cycle period due to the sun being so quiet.

Usually the much more powerful solar winds would blast the plasma away and you would not see this.

Try to picture the vortex created by water going down a sink at normal atmospheric pressure, compared to the same phenomena that was blasted from the side with pressure, resulting with the water barely trickling down the sink in small ebbs & flows.
