Is this a way for Porter to take the front foot in any inquiry?

Surely part of the court case would be to establish if the allegations are true or not? Except in this situation, Porter has made himself the claimant.
Hide behind: Before the Courts, inappropriate to comment.

Might work for the bubble people, not so much for the general population.

Isn't that exactly the same as Andrews' hotel quarantine enquiry, just hiding behind the enquiry? Sure seemed to work for some bubble people around here...

Not at all, the chair of the quarantine inquiry made it clear that there was no reason public discussion could not continue over the matters before her; it was Andrew’s who said he had no comment to make while the inquiry was underway and he reserved his comments for his evidence, which resulted in one of his ministers having to resign. Accountability 101

Career defining moment, it’ll be very very hard for Louise to prove he actually did it, even if the burden of proof drops to balance of probabilities.

She also did Pell and does anyone seriously think his reputation is improved by Rich People's Court giving him free pass to the retirement home?

The Attorney General suing a Four Corners journalist is in of itself a strategic defeat for the Attorney General.

Porter will never be PM now.

Defamation law is pretty tricky and I'm sure others here know far more about it than me, but pretty sure Milligan and the ABC have a strong claim that the article was in the public interest as well as maybe that the content was true insofar as they were reporting an allegation, not that Porter definitively r*ped the woman. The ABC/Milligan don't have to prove that he did it in any standard of proof -- the case is about the content of the media piece, not about Porter's innocence or guilt.

Her work will have been legalled to hell. As you say, there's a very substantial public interest element, although that acts more as reducing the aggravation than "getting them off".

It is entirely possible, and would be my prediction her, that Porter gets a nominal win but only after his entire reputation (what remains of it) is dragged through the mud but the judge also makes the finding that the ABC was entitled to publish much of what it did in the public interest.

In any case, this won't even get to court and is simply a stunt to give LNP MPs an out for whenever they're asked about it from now on, especially after the demonstration today. "It's now in front of the courts so it would be inappropriate to comment on it at this time." or something like that.

I don't think he can walk away from it now, but yes, it does serve that tactical purpose you describe.

I also believe it won’t make it to court but if they have to redact the story or if the journo doubles down with extra info, it’ll become a massive story in itself.

Career defining.

Hmmmm, I don't know.

Pell getting let off didn't her career. McKenzie losing his case to Chau Chak Wing didn't hurt his career.

These types of cases/stories are great for media outlets for the free publicity.

News Corpse and its Sky After Dark minions like Andrew Bolt are going after Milligan pretty hard.

It is disgraceful the amount of pass interference they run for this mob.

And child rapists.

Even bigger defenders of paedos.

Enough to make you go QAnon

Worth recalling of course that Louise Milligan does have a law degree herself, from Melbourne Uni.

It’s certainly interesting power play by Porter, he might end up burying himself Snoopy Tanner/John West style.

Yep, it’ll be interesting to see if he gets voted out by his electorate before all this is over.

Out of all the previous mentioned, this one is a better not miss, hopefully she’s crossed i’s and dotting t, because she’ll be thrown under the bus pretty quickly over something stupid like adequate right of reply.

Can't see how he can win - might just be a tactic to try and quash media discussion, especially from ABC.

I can’t see how this is a smart idea on his part full stop

Defamation cases rarely are.
Discovery would be interesting...

Wow. Durack must be close to the world's biggest electorate.
According to the ever reliable Wikipedia:

At 1,629,858 km² (64 per cent of the landmass of Western Australia), Durack is the largest electorate in Australia by land area, the largest constituency in the world that practices compulsory voting, and the third largest single-member electorate in the world after Nunavut in Canada and Alaska in the United States.[4] Although physically similar in size to Mexico, the electorate has only 300 settlements
