What if one of these kids is from a broken home? What if mum is working two jobs to put food on the table and the kid is having to look after his little bro and sis when he gets home from school? What if he is feeling left behind compared to his peers? What if he feels that society is ******* him in the arse and now he is hearing that he is the one doing the oppressing?

In theory such an approach to helping kids identify historical oppression is fine. In practice you could pick out the wrong kid and have the opposite impact.

Look, if this was done at Wesley College or some other school where the white males are 95% likely to come from the richest families in Melbourne then yeah, it is a decent exercise. But a state school in what is not necessarily a strong socio-economic area? Not sure it fits.

Funny you mention Wesley cos in the last month or so there are reports of female students copping "mild" levels of sexual abuse, groping etc etc

But lets do this at some outer S-Eastern public school where there are no reports of this shit.

It must be difficult to decipher this complex place when you’re world view is made up of right wing agitators..

So far we’ve had the school, the principal, the council, local council members, ceo of the council, local member of parliament all apologise unreservedly, yet you are here, still thinking this is some sort of left wing/right wing episode..

a nice football analogy would be, you are fogdog, with his trollies, after the infamous press conference.

It was a dumb thing that you would never have known about without NewsCorp blowing it up to further the endless culture war they run to distract from the fact this country is being strip mined both literally and figuratively.

Well done, you're another useful idiot in the culture war, getting enormously agitated about an ant you didn't even know was there until the suspiciously well funded Ant Police turned up, ignoring the very real lion in your backyard that will eat your kids.

Are you claiming that believing this was wrong and that there was nothing wrong with Newscorp reporting it is the equivalent of being a right-wing nutjob?

IIRC News splashed it on the front page.

No, it is not front page news.

Does it even warrant coverage in a newspaper covering a city trhe size of Melbourne?

No, I wouldn't have thought so.

Let's be honest - it was a ******* extra curricular teacher telling a few dozen kids something stupid.

Homie, that's happening thousands of times a day in thousands of school across the state.

It just so happen they pick out this ONE instance for the full treatment, wonder why that is, what a mystery.

It is a stretch to say it isn't news. The culture wars give me the shits and the probability is high that a bunch of right-wing opinion columnists will jump on this and blow it up out of all proportion using moronic phrases like woke, marxism, and cancel culture to fire up their followers. It doesn't mean it isn't newsworthy though.

There is not a chasm of difference between the way Newscorp handles things like this and the way that The Age wages an ongoing campaign against private schools as per the example from ferball's post.

This is all well and good but irrelevant to the topic at hand and has literally nothing to do with the welfare of the kids involved.

after all, that’s all that’s important here, not ant police, not newscorp, none of it matters. Yet that’s all you seem to want to discuss.

It's a pile on!!!!!!!!

Mild sexual abuse? Last time I checked, sexual abuse isn't mild. It is why we distinguish with harassment and the more serious abuse.

Fair enough.

Call it sexual harrassment then. There is a scale tho, its why some convictions for sexual abuse have more serious consequences than others.

I wasn’t having a go at you at all, more the general use of the word mild in a scale to describe sexual abuse.

Yeah but who was that extra curricular teacher and what other roles do they have at that school?

Its not beyond the bounds of reasonable possibility that one of those white, straight, Christian boys isn't straight, just keeps it to themselves. The extra curricular teacher presenting things from a LGTBI perspective in that class would probably be involved in some sort of counselling for this (potential) kid if they came to the school asking for support. So there is potential here for that kid (if they exist) to be alienated from support networks they could need as a result of this. The worst case scenario in that situation is that kid topping themselves.

That is a very different thing to be upset about than just some RWNJ talking points.

This...
All that matters is the kids welfare at the centre of this, the agitators voices who pollute the discussion around the topic, aren’t helpful.

My favourite part of that story is after the principle downplayed everyone’s concerns, he wants to become the point of contact, for all these girls.
fmd, as if he isn’t going to sell them down the river to protect the school’s reputation at any cost..

Those two situations (Parkdale and Wesley) and the responses are staggeringly different.

Have folks here watched The Bureau?

Started watching the first ep. Wasn't concentrating but I have heard it's good.

Is brilliant, have watched all five seasons.

Shits on Homeland or any of the other US/Israeli propaganda series.

Indeed the treatment of CIA and Mossad in it is quite fascinating

Will definitely give it a crack. There is some great stuff on SBSOnDemand.

If you like a good spy story The Courier is a movie worth checking out.

How did you rate The Spy on Netflix?
