I was in a similar position back in 1990 when Victoria was an absolute economic basket case. Like it is about to become again unfortunately. Just finished uni and was applying for graduate positions left right and centre but kept getting knocked back, usual response from accounting firms was they’ve canceled graduate programs due to budget cuts etc. Collected over 150 knock back letters for a laugh. Not many of the guys I went to uni with kicked on with their chosen careers cause things were pretty shit. When things got better mid 90‘s firms were taking more recent graduates so I basically missed the boat. Still I kept on doing whatever I could find, warehouse work, cleaning, a packaging factory, 7-11 anything to make a dollar. Work was there for those that wanted to work, you just simply couldn’t choose. For around 4 or 5 summers though me and my mates would go on the dole and go surfing down the coast, for 3-4 months ‘annual leave’. Dole was easy to get.Yeah, job hunting absolutely ******* sucks. I'm accustomed to it now but if you're not, it really sucks at your self-worth and piles on anxiety.
A couple of months ago I lost mine. I'd been contracting at a startup for months, it was a great company and provided products that I believed in. The team I was in were told that there was cashflow issues and then 2 days later it was all over.
I've applied for 20+ positions since, had probably 10 interviews but still no luck. I keep getting told that they like me but there's 100+ applications for every position and each time it seemed like there was someone that was a slightly better fit or had more relevant experience. You just gotta be patient, not let it get to you and keep on trucking. (Haha and yes, I realise that this reads as if I'm just using this thread as a way to reinforce the message to myself and yeah that's probably what I'm doing)
Then went overseas for year and had massive ‘bender’. Came back broke and ended up at Crown for 5 years. Then applied as a mature aged graduate in the federal public service but just missed out. They only took the best 10% of the applicants and most jobs were in Canberra so was not too fussed missing out. Out of the blue got a letter from Customs asking if I was interested in applying so I did. They had gotten my results from the graduate test. Spent several years there and transferred to another government dept for more money. Hated it with a passion so quit after a few months and drove taxis for a while. Dad was a cabbie. Then a mate at the wharf told me there were jobs there and that you really didn’t need any qualifications, maybe just a criminal record, just joking…. Been there over 15 years now and pretty much ‘institutionalised’ now. We were actually having a laugh about it earlier today at work. Thought about having one last ‘career change’ a few years ago then covid hit so ain’t going anywhere.
Point I’m trying to make is even if you can’t find work in your chosen/prefered area do anything you can find as it can open up networks and other opportunities like it basically did for me. Working and earning a dollar gives you at least a sense of self worth (and off BF!!). It’s going to be an economic nightmare in Victoria in the next few years. Businesses big and small will be leaving and closing in droves. Confidence is absolutely shot here. There is no trust or certainty. The first thing company’s will trim is PR, HR and marketing budgets. It’ll also be their excuse to restructure and we all know what that means. The most basic of jobs will have many many applicants. I went through it unfortunately and I see the same similarities and circumstances again. Going to be a very hard next 5 years for 20-30 year olds. Not sure how it all works now but a safe, boring public service job would probably be a good idea. Maybe look into that.
