Vanguard and Blackrock are mostly custodians or investment managers, rather than owning it themselves. So retail investors can invest in their ETFs, and buy a small parcel of lots of different companies around the world.Oh well. I was looking for something positive. He did say it would cost him tens of millions of dollars tho and they own half the publishing rights so that would have been significant wouln't it, its half the money from the song every time its played yeah? But of course they'll live.
BTW I said Black Rock and Vanguard own everything (including Hipgnosis via Blackstone) upthread it wasn't really truye. What I really meant (and should have typed) was they own a piece of everything (often a pretty big piece.)
They're basically a series of shells for the same bunch of people.Vanguard and Blackrock are mostly custodians or investment managers, rather than owning it themselves. So retail investors can invest in their ETFs, and buy a small parcel of lots of different companies around the world.
Of course, it's not us plebs who make up the majority of the most being managed by Blackrock or Vanguard, it's big institutions, often pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, college endowments - and the ultra wealthy. (Although the ultra wealthy typically have most of their wealth tied up in the business they founded.)
Blackstone is a big investor in its own right, but still looks after something like 50x of other peoples' money than they do their own. Fwiw, I think the Blackstone investment in Hipgnosis is a direct one, not on behalf of anyone else.

Mate, you're probably too young to understand Neil Young's contribution to the world.
If you were older, you'd realise it's embarrassing to compare him unfavourably to Joe Rogan.
Is he a sensible person or does he just blow whichever way the popular wind blows?
Looks like Neil Young's action might hit Spotify far more than it will impact him.

Spotify Lost More Than $2 Billion in Market Value After Neil Young Pulled His Music Over Joe Rogan’s Podcast
Spotify's market cap fell $2.1 billion after Neil Young pulled his songs in protest of Joe Rogan's misinformation-spreading podcast.variety.com
It will be very interesting to see how many music lovers leave Spotify and how many musicians will weigh up their options and decide to leave - I will be cancelling.
There's starting to be a bit of a stench about Spotify.
There are better places to get music.Looks like Neil Young's action might hit Spotify far more than it will impact him.

Let us also not forget that in 1985 Neil Young blamed gay people for AIDs and said in an interview he didn't want them handling his potatoes at the supermarket, I'd quote his exact quote but it is ban worthy in this day and age. Is he a sensible person or does he just blow whichever way the popular wind blows?
That is a bit unkind, in the mid 80s I was more or less a socialist, we can have crazy ideas and move forward and grow. I am sure he was grateful that the world didn't excommunicate him for those regressive thoughts and he was allowed the opportunity to grow.
I don't watch the Joe Rogan podcast regularly, I will see the odd one like when he has Neil Degrasse Tyson, Steven Pinker or someone else of interest but don't generally watch the show. I think it is fine for Rogan to put on guys like McCullough or Malone but he doesn't have the toolbox to take in what they say and follow up with critical thinking follow up questions and as far as I am aware he hasn't invited any of the doctors or scientists who have eviscerated those guests and their opinions. I think he should do more to show more balanced sides when confronting serious current issues.
Rogan contract began 1 September 2020.The article doesn’t mention if their stock price went up after the Rogan signing. It does say that it was already sliding since January. Be interesting to see if there’s a overall net gain or loss since they signed Rogan.
