I don’t know why I’m freaking out about HECS debt.

Just wanted to see alternatives than forking out 300k for unimelb. Deakin is only 10k a year but it’s in geelong so bit of a negative

Once you begin using your HELP loan limit, the amount of HELP you have left to borrow is known as your available 'HELP balance'.

For 2021, the HELP loan limit is $108,232. If you plan to study medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science leading to initial registration, or eligible aviation courses the HELP loan limit is $155,448.

Your HELP balance is renewable. Any compulsory or voluntary HELP or VSL debt repayments starting from the 2019–20 income year will top up a person's HELP balance. These repayments will be applied to a person's HELP balance from 1 July 2020 onwards. Repayments can be re-borrowed in the future, up to the current HELP loan limit.

You probably won’t find out until you start, which is most people. I ended up in a field I never thought I’ll end up in and many of my colleagues ended up in law.

Whatever you think will bring you greater joy, as you are going to have a nice debt to accompany it (pathology will be better paying).

If someone honestly handed you a Google Pixel and said it was set up for encryption, you’d have to sit them down and explain what Google actually is..

Get a medical degree and you pretty much have a job for life. Even if it is not in a specialist field, or even patient focused, there are policy, science and program management jobs available.

I did 6 years in a kids burns unit. Great job. Burst into tears after the first 3 weeks. Manager convinced me to stay. Loved every minute.

Specialities, same as medicine.

I did general peads.for 3 years, burns for 6, cardiac / renal for 7 then recovery for 17.

As you trip along you find something you enjoy. I got mates who are mid-wives. They love it.

Let's be very clear. His claimed to being forced into the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is entirely plausible. He and his family are at huge risk of persecution.

They should be allowed to stay. They are victims of political posturing as you say. Dutton chose them as the sacrificial victims to make sure the world understands we mean what we say. On Australia's asylum policies, he's right. Dutton is no more morally culpable than Rudd.

Indeed, Rudd is WORSE because he also did exactly what Dutton/Morrison are doing - he screwed people's lives for political gain. Remember he did it just before the 2013 election, after he'd seized the leadership back.

It was an awful, cynical and unforgiveable act then. Yes the current family are photogenic and every gets the feelz for a little girl in distress - see Bana Alabed of Aleppo fame - but what about the thousands of people you never saw who had their lives ruined by Rudd's poisonous electioneering?

Nah, Rudd doesn't get to slink away for a second. He's every bit as responsible for what is happening to that little girl as Morrison, Dutton and now shamefully Karen Andrews.

Mate, I'm not really disputing any of this. I've said plenty of times that just because I despise the policies and members of the Liberal Party, it doesn't mean that I'm a Labor supporter or voter.

But the fact is that these children, one of whom is now in hospital with a blood infection, were put in detention and have remained there indefinitely without any real prospect of release by this government at the discretion of a single minister. Yes, they are part of a larger context across multiple governments, I get that. But that doesn't abdicate this government of responsibility for the situation that they are in right at this very minute, which was the point of my first post. As you say, it amounts to torture, a crime against humanity, and it was committed by this government and this country that we like to think of as egalitarian and equal when it so often proves to be anything but.

And yeah, it's a culmination of a history of horrific asylum seeker and immigration policy and that shouldn't ever be forgotten. Every single person that we locked up for years on end, every child we put behind bars, is a ****ing tragedy and an indelible stain on the fabric of this country, no matter the government that did it.

Morrison dodged his responsibilities for unaccompanied minors as the responsible minister, and removed access to assistance from advocates with migration law qualifications. He keeps a model boat on his desk, apparently, to celebrate his achievement. I agree it is a stain, and one this government celebrates.
