Lol I’d rather not

Sir are you suggesting that I’m not doing my research lol 🙄 I’m using pubmed
No, but I’ve seen plenty of undergrads half-ass papers and rely on just a few sources. In other words, be on top of it and engage with a wide variety of both pro and counter points.

Are you a lecturer?

I’m trying to make a mindmap with as many ideas as possible as my group it’s only me and a girl whereas others have 4 people

Hi guys I’m currently doing a debate topic for one of my subjects and the topic is ‘Transgender athletes should be able to compete in the category that matches their gender identity’ which I am debating for it.

Can anyone give me a few points on why they should. Much appreciated
Cant think of any

Can't give you any points for your position but it always helps to dedicate some time (maybe 30 per cent of each round) to anticipating and addressing your opponent's points before they even say them. It will rattle them and force them to either make something up on the fly, or they will spend their round making a point you've already destroyed.

Sadly it’s not an actual debate where there is another side😭 we just have to present the arguments on a recorded zoom

Then don’t reply

Speaking from my own experience as a student and an academic tutor.

Mind maps are usually focused on the main themes and concepts, with the occasional key stat chucked in. Good way to go about it as it simplifies the process. I usually read a few journal articles, write out the main themes/concepts and then fill the sub points out. It is different for everyone.

Haha this obviously isn't the most academic advice or approach (sorry, K4e and TMB!!), but seriously, just start with a basic Google search using keywords as simple as 'pros and cons for trans sport.' Use any source as a starting point, but obviously don't reference it if it's not academic. It'll put you in a headspace for arguments you can make but also give you an idea of the arguments on the other side for you to counter. Once you have a basic understanding, you can brainstorm for what you should be looking for from academic sources.

Yes I am just gaining ideas into a brain storm then going in detail, but I just wanted to ask just incase I’ve missed any points of views that other people have.

I’m also doing 90% of this lmao my partner is not doing much

Just a question, but are you being asked for a clear cut ‘yes’ argument, or can you add conditions?
If so, it is worth looking at the policies that are in place for existing sporting bodies and associations, then working back through the studies and arguments that were used to justify their positions.

Yes we are and no conditions

And further to this Ligma were people given the option of arguing against? I’ve noticed that this type of subject is very one sided in academia.

This is what we were given. We have to use either Hannah or idk the other girls name on why they are allowed to compete

Recently, but academia tends to do that for periods, especially in the humanities, i.e. orthodoxy, revisionist and post-revisionist, not to mention the history wars to an extent.

The other woman is the 45 year old weightlifter from New Zealand. So you can’t argue against?
No, not by the information that I was given

How do they go revisionist on wars/post war? How do they justify the 100 million people killed after the Germans unleashed Lennon on Europe?

Orthodoxy is basically the original standard for judging a historical event and treated WWI/WWII/Communism as you would expect. WWI was very orientated on the question of German guilt and war crimes as well as maximizing the roles of the Anglo-powers. Second World War was a bit different due to the attempts by some German generals to perpetuate the 'clean Wermacht myth', but most treated the Nazis in a fairly black and white manner. Communism was treated a bit similar as this monolithic force.

Revisionism had always been a concept that followed orthodoxy, but it really took hold in the 1950-1990s period. It really attacked the core tenets of orthodox arguments and was a lot more nuanced and, sometimes, sympathetic towards the Germans on a lot of issues, especially on the subject of pre-WWI, Versailles and other nations getting outbluffed by Hitler in the 1930s. In regards to communism, again, a lot more grey about things and that there were lessons to be learned, but ultimately something to be opposed. Revisionism also witnessed the gradual rise of feminist and other new styles of critiquing history.

Post-revisionist largely went back to orthodox arguments as it was felt that revisionism went a bit too far in their criticisms and didn't go hard enough at certain figures/regimes, while incorporating a lot of the better original revisionist criticisms of the old-school orthodoxy. Post-revisionist really reinforced the feminist/gender/post-modernist/sociological approaches developed during the revisionist period.

Technically, I am an orthodox historian for my thesis because it is a new sub-field, but I am effectively a post-revisionist as I critiqued a wide variety of papers ranging from the 1940s to now.
