The evacuation has been halted as the Taliban has seized the civilian part of the airport and security needs to be restored first.

The invasion of Iraq was the worst thing to happen in that situation.

That admin was stupid, arrogant and bit off more than they could chew. If they'd spent a few more years making Afghanistan work as a nation Bush would have looked like a great leader and probably would have had the world's support if he wanted to go after Saddam. And Afghanistan would have been better off. It was a reasonably peaceful country until the late 70s. In 2001 that was still close enough in time to have made something work. Bush would have been lauded for fixing a cold war mess.

If its a choice between doing one thing properly or two things in a half arsed manner you should always do the one thing properly yeah?

Hard to disagree with much of that. I am of the opinion that the conditions produced by the events of 1979 onwards made the task of state building and winning hearts and minds near impossible, but I do appreciate the merit of your 2001 making something work argument. Multiple generations have only known war, competing superpowers and corruption. The atrocities and war of the 1979-2001 period alone is enough to scar any national psyche.

That would require the united states to have any interest in making the world a better place. Both wars were waged to set up new client states and pump a shitload of money into the military industrial complex, the client states part hasn't worked out too well long term but they got exactly what they wanted

Of the approximately $145 billion the U.S. government spent trying to rebuild Afghanistan, about $83 billion went to developing and sustaining its army and police forces, according to the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, a congressionally created watchdog that has tracked the war since 2008. The $145 billion is in addition to $837 billion the United States spent fighting the war, which began with an invasion in October 2001.

The $83 billion invested in Afghan forces over 20 years is nearly double last year's budget for the entire U.S. Marine Corps and is slightly more than what Washington budgeted last year for food stamp assistance for about 40 million Americans.
