The people who were ultimately responsible, Bush and Cheney, never paid. Same way politicians never pay for their **** ups.At 2am on September 12th I said to Mrs Gaso “someone is going to pay for this”

The invasion of Iraq was the worst thing to happen in that situation.Only in March 2003 when we decided to go into Iraq. Thought it was a unnecessarily bad idea that would end badly.
As you get older though you think what more could I ever see that would shock me more than the last horror.
Then you see crystal clear video of desperate people falling off giant aircraft’s under carriages. That is shocking.
Hard to disagree with much of that. I am of the opinion that the conditions produced by the events of 1979 onwards made the task of state building and winning hearts and minds near impossible, but I do appreciate the merit of your 2001 making something work argument. Multiple generations have only known war, competing superpowers and corruption. The atrocities and war of the 1979-2001 period alone is enough to scar any national psyche. The invasion of Iraq was the worst thing to happen in that situation.
That admin was stupid, arrogant and bit off more than they could chew. If they'd spent a few more years making Afghanistan work as a nation Bush would have looked like a great leader and probably would have had the world's support if he wanted to go after Saddam. And Afghanistan would have been better off. It was a reasonably peaceful country until the late 70s. In 2001 that was still close enough in time to have made something work. Bush would have been lauded for fixing a cold war mess.
If its a choice between doing one thing properly or two things in a half arsed manner you should always do the one thing properly yeah?
It's great that these people got out and still tragic that people had to die in the liftoff.View attachment 1208294
A small ray of hope in this picture.
Thank god the senior officers I worked with in 2016 got our interpreter out a couple of years ago.

Pfft. Its actually quite terrible because we were in the process of taking them back. What your saying is digusting. The Taliban overrunning the country in a week is an absolute boon for the federal government. They never wanted to bring any Afghans that were working for us to Australia.
Now they can shed their crocodile tears, deploy a few troops to the Middle East and then say it is too dangerous.
‘Thus keeping their base and their media mates happy, whilst appearing to care.
That they were never evacuated when the embassy was closed down shames this country; it has shown us to be feckless, cowardly and uncaring as a nation towards those whom we have a responsibility to.
There's no way even that much went towards building. What exactly did they build? Whatever it was, it took the taliban about a week to completely knock it over.
