Bit sad, funny fella. Poms pretty good at comedy.

Absolutely, Hoju. Don't think I've ever laughed harder than at some of his bits on Cats Does Countdown. A very funny man and, if the reactions to his passing are anything to go by, extremely popular and lovely. RIP.

To win hearts and minds you always start with philosophy, it’s why all the great empires have worked hand in hand with religion…
They never sold anything different or better way of life, just misery and corruption.
The Persians and Romans knew that to a degree in their heyday. They largely allowed the worship of other gods and let different nations/city-states to do their own thing, not all obviously, as long as they paid their dues to the empire as a whole.

Imposing values on a very conservative religious country was always going to be an issue.

Even if the methodology of Pew would be a bit off with such a rural country, including the difficulties related to data collection, it is clear that the country is deeply religious.

Imagine what rural Afghans with no phones would have told the Pew Research Center...

When all you have is religion, what do you expect? They revere their religion because it promises so much after they die; compared to the nothing they have now.

It would take years of open education to effect change, something that will never happen.

Everyone is quick to criticize the Afghan military for folding so easily but what were the US etc doing for 20 years. Nothing effective it appears.

Another win for asymmetric warfare and a motivated opponent.

It's almost like they learnt nothing from the Vietnam War ..... insert troops to "train" local troops, fight their war for them ...... leave ... unmotivated army falls apart.

No this photo is not from the Vietnamese War ......

Well said, in 1000 years people will even look upon our times as "dark ages" given the still prevalent numbers that still believe in deities.
