Bouncy castle incident in Devonport is horrible.

Those things are dangerous as it is when you get trampled on by others.

Stricter safety regulations or ban the lot.
How do you regulate against a strong gust of wind? Kids love em and they are relatively safe. Or do you go the guy forks route and ban them all together then no one enjoys them.

Something similar happened and a child sadly died in South Australia about 20 years back. I thought they had made drastic changes then.

Better Anchoring, including a bias where panels rip, are apparently steps that are usually taken. I say that only from what I heard on the radio.
It’s not legislation against a strong gust of wind, it is just adding extra design and operation requirements, I guess.
I doubt many schools will use them in the foreseeable future without some action now anyway.

It comes down to the person that sets it up
You can have all the safety precautions you want but if it’s not pegged properly it won’t help.

Those poor families

I don't think pegging is foolproof. They really need a water bladder to act as ballast.

That is the reality sadly. There is a role for organizations like the SES or fire brigade in this area I believe, especially as they often attend such events anyway. A bit of funding and training to worthwhile organizations to increase safety, and help with their operation costs, is money well spent.

Peg the ****ing thing down properly. Not with 100mm shitty pegs, but proper ****ing pegs. Too many cowboys making easy money off stuff like this. They just rock up inflate it and piss off.

Yeah it would depend on the soil.
Precisely. Then you would need regulations such as compulsory soil tests or permeant anchorages which would severely hamper the ability for them to be used in occasional events.

Even water ballasting would have a fair impact of them being suitable for occasional events where a decent supply of water was unavailable or required to be trucked in.

This is a clear case of OH&S protocol change after something bad happens.
Plenty of prior cases Val.

Fairground rides tend to operate under the radar a bit due to their transient nature.

Even the dreamworld log ride incident was able to occur at an established facility.
I know we get pissed off at overly officious/clunky permit systems, but this is why these systems should exist. Especially when it comes to the safety of kids on a school activity.
The problem may be that people have forgotten why a process is there, and worried too much about getting through the process itself.
Bloody tragic whatever the case.

Hate to go all old man yelling at clouds, but jumping castles were a novelty when I was a kid. Now they’re at just about every kids event, shit even kids parties have them, my sister hired one for her sons birthday, the people just turned up got it started and came back at the end of the day.

Even with a water ballast system like you’re referring to comes with its own issues. Puncture hole in the base and then it could get electricity running through it from the power to the blower.

Are the people that hire these out even licensed?

As others have suggested...pegging/anchoring to the ground.

Making sure soil is suitable.

If the weather forecast suggests X high wind gusts....then for that day you have state wide ban. Similar to total fire ban for hot days.

Perhaps new model types need to be made and a ban on older ones.

I can't process how a castle with at least 10 50kg kids gets that high in the air.
They are basically a huge sail. Look at how a airbus à380s wings can lift the entire fuselage. Burnoulis principle 101. Big surface area above with a lot of airflow across it, no airflow underneath equals lift.

Well if they’re all in the air when the gust of wind hits - it’s pretty easy

As others have said the pegs that come with these are sub standard and thinner than chop sticks

Worked in a kids burns unit for 6 years Kosh. Reason the 3 senior staff there ensured that " fireworks " got banned from sale.

The most awkward thing I’ve done at work is measuring a guy for a suit especially an older guy lol

just putting the tape measurer around their waist is just SO AWKWARD

which is sort of my point, the people in ER departments are always the ones that see the pointy end of any activities that are hazardous. its no coincidence that same group have called for tighter liquer controls, Ice education, covid vaccinations etc. on the other hand what they are seeing a concentrated amount of incidents in these area because thats where people inevitably go when injured participating in said activites.

the side effect of that it can create perceptions that said activities incidents are more plentiful than they actually are.
an example i work in a maintenance area of a large industrial operation where much of the maintenance is contracted out. its really only the jobs that are not done correctly by the contractors that come to my attention as we inevitable have to fix them, it sort of gives the perception that all the contractors work sucks however there is a bomb of work they do that doesn't come to my attention that was fine.

iam not saying its right or wrong for said groups to be lobbying for risky activities to be governed just that it can lead to a bit of a nanny state mentality.

quad bikes and chainsaws are a other examples, they save me a lot of time and are fantastically effective for some tasks but can be bloody dangerous. fwiw i use a quad without rops almost daily even though we have a side by side. but if our property depended on contract labour i wouldn't be letting them use said equipment.

Hey ferball how goods your memory? Do you remember a few years ago I posted a bit of digital art by a dude who goes by Beeple? Think it was a Trump piece. Your response was “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should”

Well that dude has made over $100M USD this year alone selling his art as NFT’s. I still don’t really understand why people buy NFT’s. I tried searching for it but couldn’t find it.

It sounds vaguely familiar but my memory is fairly average these days.

100million bucks? That's alot of money for essentially **** all.

What happened in Tassie is devestating. I have family and friends down there. They are gutted.

We used to have them for our Fire Brigade/local Christmas party. We haven't had one for a couple of years because of covid but we always have two adults (at least) watching and there are usually guy ropes and pegs but that's handled by the people that own the jumping castle.

Kids always get hurt, every now and then some end up in hospital with broken arms or other minor but serious injuries. I'd never thought of them getting airbourne but looking back its not that surprising.

My sister in law is a doctor at the children’s hospital, she specialises in spinal injuries (there’s a name for it but can’t for the life of me remember what it is) she says jumping castles, play grounds, trampolines injuries and obviously car accidents are the 4 that kids get hurt the most on.
