How do you regulate against a strong gust of wind? Kids love em and they are relatively safe. Or do you go the guy forks route and ban them all together then no one enjoys them.

I don't think pegging is foolproof. They really need a water bladder to act as ballast.

That is the reality sadly. There is a role for organizations like the SES or fire brigade in this area I believe, especially as they often attend such events anyway. A bit of funding and training to worthwhile organizations to increase safety, and help with their operation costs, is money well spent.

Peg the ****ing thing down properly. Not with 100mm shitty pegs, but proper ****ing pegs. Too many cowboys making easy money off stuff like this. They just rock up inflate it and piss off.

I know we get pissed off at overly officious/clunky permit systems, but this is why these systems should exist. Especially when it comes to the safety of kids on a school activity.
The problem may be that people have forgotten why a process is there, and worried too much about getting through the process itself.
Bloody tragic whatever the case.

Hate to go all old man yelling at clouds, but jumping castles were a novelty when I was a kid. Now they’re at just about every kids event, shit even kids parties have them, my sister hired one for her sons birthday, the people just turned up got it started and came back at the end of the day.

Even with a water ballast system like you’re referring to comes with its own issues. Puncture hole in the base and then it could get electricity running through it from the power to the blower.

As others have suggested...pegging/anchoring to the ground.

Making sure soil is suitable.

If the weather forecast suggests X high wind gusts....then for that day you have state wide ban. Similar to total fire ban for hot days.

Perhaps new model types need to be made and a ban on older ones.

They are basically a huge sail. Look at how a airbus à380s wings can lift the entire fuselage. Burnoulis principle 101. Big surface area above with a lot of airflow across it, no airflow underneath equals lift.

Worked in a kids burns unit for 6 years Kosh. Reason the 3 senior staff there ensured that " fireworks " got banned from sale.

which is sort of my point, the people in ER departments are always the ones that see the pointy end of any activities that are hazardous. its no coincidence that same group have called for tighter liquer controls, Ice education, covid vaccinations etc. on the other hand what they are seeing a concentrated amount of incidents in these area because thats where people inevitably go when injured participating in said activites.

the side effect of that it can create perceptions that said activities incidents are more plentiful than they actually are.
an example i work in a maintenance area of a large industrial operation where much of the maintenance is contracted out. its really only the jobs that are not done correctly by the contractors that come to my attention as we inevitable have to fix them, it sort of gives the perception that all the contractors work sucks however there is a bomb of work they do that doesn't come to my attention that was fine.

iam not saying its right or wrong for said groups to be lobbying for risky activities to be governed just that it can lead to a bit of a nanny state mentality.

quad bikes and chainsaws are a other examples, they save me a lot of time and are fantastically effective for some tasks but can be bloody dangerous. fwiw i use a quad without rops almost daily even though we have a side by side. but if our property depended on contract labour i wouldn't be letting them use said equipment.

What happened in Tassie is devestating. I have family and friends down there. They are gutted.

We used to have them for our Fire Brigade/local Christmas party. We haven't had one for a couple of years because of covid but we always have two adults (at least) watching and there are usually guy ropes and pegs but that's handled by the people that own the jumping castle.

Kids always get hurt, every now and then some end up in hospital with broken arms or other minor but serious injuries. I'd never thought of them getting airbourne but looking back its not that surprising.

My sister in law is a doctor at the children’s hospital, she specialises in spinal injuries (there’s a name for it but can’t for the life of me remember what it is) she says jumping castles, play grounds, trampolines injuries and obviously car accidents are the 4 that kids get hurt the most on.
