That statement from North ****ing sucks. 'Mistreatment and hurt' to describe violent colonisation that continues to this day is some bullshit. And it just sits on the fence with no solidarity with indigenous people at all. "We respect everyone's right to acknowledge or mourn this day..." as if there's a bloody equivalence there. This just isn't it.

Surprising too considering we've been stronger about our support for changing the date in the past.

Brisbane and Port showed the way.

Maybe they didn’t want to be divisive?

This was our statement last year:

You can make a better statement than the garbage of today and not be divisive. Edit: We also have a proud indigenous history at our footy club, including our current vice-captain who is very vocal on this, and to not even acknowledge that today is bullshit.

I agree that “mistreatment and hurt” is a peculiar way to talk about genocide, but I don’t know how you can read the last sentence as anything but a consciously inclusive call to change the date.

Wow pvo getting eaten alive by the very people that worshipped him until recently.

Expressing an opinion is a dangerous game these days.
There might be a reason for that perhaps.

Dragging a dead * alleged* sexual assault victim in the national broadsheet because he's mates with the accused, writing a piece in the same paper criticising the current AotY and rape survivor for effectively not smiling more, and suing a disabled woman for a tweet would probably upset some people and be an indication of his true colours don't you think?

Because it's a bit of a platitude that exists in the context of the statement before it.

Exactly!

He should have known better than to offer his individual opinion. Particularly when his people don’t accept nuance or differing opinions.

Only has himself to blame.

Career over.

WHat? He hosts a show on a major network and has a regular piece in the national paper. How is that career over?

How dare people criticise opinions though right, especially when they're ****ing awful. Everyone should be able to say whatever they want with no accountability at all, is that right?

I meant after this incident.

I think he’ll have to offer an apology after this expression of opinion or he won’t be back on the project.
So youre complaining about something that hasn't happened?

Sorry didn’t see the second part when I replied.

People can criticise others opinions all they want. That’s the point of a free and democratic country. Whilst I personally don’t find his opinion “****ing awful” I do agree that he’s getting what he deserves. How he thought that opinion was going to fly with his audience is baffling.

I hear you bro, but I also suspect that a referendum on changing the date won’t be won by alienating everyone for whom Australia Day has some nostalgic value.

I think you can make a case to those people who still need convincing and to demonstrate solidarity with First Nations people at the same time without contradiction.

Do you mean like an official referendum or do you mean more like the discussion haha? In any case, there doesn't need to be some sort of mass consultation to change it. Just as there wasn't when the date's been changed however many times it's been changed in the past. It's only been ion the 26th since like 1992 or something, right?

1994

It’s been a public holiday in NSW for nearly 100 years and it’s been a public holiday in Victoria since 1902.

Neither the ALP or the Coalition will have the appetite to bring changing the date to an election for at least a decade, even though a critical mass already rejects the date. The only serious option for the foreseeable future is a referendum. This is why I support our clubs statement.

and what of the video that the club put out featuring Hayden?

Important and insightful. Which, imo, makes the statement from earlier in the day all the more bizarre. Better of posting nothing earlier and the Kyron video as a statement in and of itself.

I was just curious, as the only difference I could really see and the point you seemed to be making between last years and this years was a lack of acknowledgement our proud inidegnous history. And instead of relegating that to half a tweet this year there was a video of one such player and their experiences being spoken about to the rest of the club. To me, that's doing more not less.

See I interpreted it as massively sitting on the fence, drawing a moral parallel between those who celebrate the day and those who see it as a day of mourning, when no such parallel exists, and treating them as equally appropriate, which I don't think they are, especially when you consider the context of Kyron's speech.

Whereas the tone from last year is completely different. It centres the indigenous experience.

Fair enough if you and others see it differently though, but that was my inerpretation.

fair enough, I missed that point

Keep the date.
Keep the name Australia Day.
Make Australia a good place for indigenous Australians (as judged by indigenous Australians).
I'd like and hope to see that in my lifetime.
