Looks like Neil Young's action might hit Spotify far more than it will impact him.

It will be very interesting to see how many music lovers leave Spotify and how many musicians will weigh up their options and decide to leave - I will be cancelling.

There's starting to be a bit of a stench about Spotify.
To be fair, tech companies have taken a pounding over the last few months, and the last week or so has seen the overall market getting to the point where it is down 10% from the most recent highs - which is quite significant.

It's a pretty lazy analysis by Variety to attribute that to Neil Young.

One thing I'd never think he does is blowing the way the popular wind blows.

He's out there and very much marches to the beat of his own drum. He doesn't always get it right but I believe he has a very strong moral compass that at times drives him even if sometimes it goes off direction now and then.

Yeah, who knows, I don't know him well enough and I did say that was unkind because my views definitely changed since the mid 80s on some things.

I just think the attempt to censor is a bit nuts, because the issue isn't that Rogan has an opinion that is harmful, the issue is that there are doctors and scientists who have different options to the policy makers, this has probably happened since the dawn of science but in this day and age it is paraded through social and mainstream media and the public is being exposed to the reality of medicine and science, people are often wrong... science is overcoming the numerous errors we make along the way. You read the news and almost every month you read red meat is good for you, red meat will kill you, this amount is good for you, that amount gives you cancer. It is really all white noise, every 6 months we read about a breakthrough in cancer treatment... decades later, we are still exposing you to nuclear radiation.

I think the public needs to be better educated about how the process of science and medicine works and not to be too caught up in those specialists that have different opinions. Trust in your doctor to give you advice about your health, he is the one being paid to sieve through all this bullshit. We can't seem to handle two people having a different opinion without it turning into a political calamity.

He does have people from the other side of the isle on, like Sanjay Gupta and Dr Rhonda Partrick for example, others too, but they don’t grab attention. People are drawn to negativity and outrage so I spose it makes sense.

He’s also got an open invitation to anyone who wants to debate McCullough.

I don't think either of those two people have any real knowledge about any of the vaccines or covid, one works at CNN and I had a quick look at an exchange between Rhonda and Joe and she seemed to lack any substantial knowledge of the topic and struggled with Joe's follow up questions. He should speak to someone like Paul Offit who has made vaccines, is an infectious disease expert, has been on the CDC advisory committee on immunisation practices, he knows everyone of relevance in the field, he has the toolset to answer Joe's questions and his follow up questions.

Nobody wants to debate McCullough or Malone, it is a bit like having a debate with a Flat Earther, you know it isn't going to get anywhere, they will bombard you with pseudoscience and believe in conspiracy theories.

I am sure people will answer Joe's questions in an interview alone though. Question is if Joe wants more than low-hanging fruit, it only took me 20 seconds to find a study Joe was referring to which wasn't peer reviewed and had significant doubts over the methodology, this should be bread and butter stuff for someone who is an expert on covid and the vaccines.

While we’re on the topic of Rogan, he had Jordan Peterson on recently. I’ve never really paid any attention to Peterson but he honestly doesn’t make any sense when he’s talking. He makes weird analogies or metaphors and jumps around so much when he’s trying to make a point that its hard to follow. I spent most of the time thinking just get to the point mate.

Joe Rogan is not going to do anything that will effect his number of listeners in a bad way. Full stop. We/he’d be mad to think otherwise. He came up with the idea and it’s made him rich.

I actually saw bits of that one for some reason or other. Not much tho.

Peterson is in some sort of decline. He's always been like that to a degree -seemingly all over the place - he'd always weave it back together tho into some sort of logic, even when he was talking crap (which was fairly often imo) but he's getting a bit too grandpa Simpson to really cut it anymore.

There is an art to bamboozling people with bullshit and he has forgotten it.

LOL at the ability to now "gift" permanent bans.

This site is becoming a scam.

Thank god for my VPN so the ads don't give me a hernia.

My missus helps run a facebook group centred around John Peel and music.

Five years ago someone made a post saying Bob Marley wrote and sang "Don't Worry Be Happy" and they are now on restricted posting and restricted promotion by facebook because they have been spreading false information.

This is what its come to.

(I'll be honest part of me thinks that is fair enough. Bob Marley is great and that song is drivel. It makes perfect sense that even facebook truth bots would find that offensive. Damn, if I say it you can slap me right here.)

Lifted from the Jed thread but seems more appropriate here
I found out today that Pfizers former CEO Jeff Kindler is now CEO at Blackstone and he told Neil Young to remove his stuff from Spotify cos he now owns Young.
Not sure if you were being tongue in cheek there.

Can you provide a credible reference? The only stuff I can find online that is saying this is from the anti vax/5G/tinfoil hat brigade.

Yes Kindler has a position in Blackstone who indirectly has 50% ownership of Young's music through Hipgnosis.

Seems like Young's record label actually pulled the stuff from Spotify at his request (with no influence from Kindler).

Pretty good explanation at

Kindler gentler machine gun hand.
:o
: ooh spooky:

Should have written that one in the sarcasm font too by the looks of things.

Kindler is actually an adviser to Blackstone on certain issues but surely has nothing to do with any of that.

However this tweet begs to differ:

So there you have it. Neil Young's boss is Pfizer and Spotify is the last independent media left in the world. Hence the corporate attack on them by Young and his boss ... Pfizer!!!

Look this whole thing is a joke.

Neil WarYounger can do what he wants with his music. Spotify are a disgrace anyway and rip off the artists they are sposed to support, no surprise there I guess its the commercial, mainstream music industry after all. The doctors that wrote to Spotify asking them to begin the moderation of misinformation (which they already do to Rogan to a degree) had misinformation (most likely a good faith error) in the letter they sent to Spotify.

Meanwhile a niche musical appreciation site with about 15000 members has just had their visibility in members (and everyone else's) newsfeeds significantly curtailed because 5 years ago someone said Bob Marley sang Don't Worry Be Happy.

It would be like banning this board from BF because someone posted that [PLAYERCARD]Corey McKernan[/PLAYERCARD] kicked 11 goals against Melbourne in 1996.

Not bad not bad

He's a funny little guy.

Somehow I ended up sitting next to him on a couch at a party around 3am - he was a very amusing guy and roared laughing when I told him I thought his music sucked.

He gets it, which is great

On a similar note, many years ago I was in a band that opened for Roberta Flack, whose big hit was Killing Me Softly. They played it twice.
