i reckon its the ultimate vote of confidence a manager can have for his client,

definitely cant blame him for that. was only his misjudgement in not declaring all the profits afterward, having said that many people more have defrauded the tax department for heaps more and never did time for it. prolly paid the price for having a high public profile and tax office made an example of him.

so how can they bad privately owned electric scooters but hire ones are legal?
I didn't even know they were banned, I swear I've seen them around heaps but there ya go.

I guess having the company owned ones allows them to collect data on use or something?

Nah, **** that - tax fraud hurts us all. He chose to use a Swiss-based accountant well known for tax evasion (which is how he came to the ATO/AFP/ACC's attention) and defrauded the Commonwealth of almost half a mill. He seems to have been motivated by a large tax bill he already had from an earlier failed investment.

Also, others caught in the same investigation who didn't have his profile received much longer sentences, but then they didn't have the likes of Peter Cosgrove and Bert Newton giving them character references. I guess you could say he was unlucky that the DPP didn't **** the case like they did with Paul Hogan. But I'd frame that as Hoges (and Strop) getting lucky.

Has anyone had something like this happen?,

I got the audiobook Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari a couple of days ago, anyway I jump on YouTube last night and in my YouTube feed was recommendations of talks he's given despite never searched for anything of his before. Weird

That book starts well enough, but you gradually lose faith in his actual understanding of history. It becomes patently clear when he talks about Australia and you see just how shallow his knowledge of Australian history (prehistory if you prefer) is. I don't think I ended up finishing it.

I only just started it damn. I tried to read ‘guns germs and steel’ earlier in the year but I lost interest pretty quickly because a lot of the stuff is outdated, which is fair enough I spose considering when it was published.

You bought it via a browser, yeah? About half of the websites people visit contain Google's web trackers.

I bought it from the books app on the iPhone but I marked it as ‘reading’ on the goodreads app. That’s probably what it is. Don’t think Apple and Google share information do they?

May I ask CharlieMortdecai what your education or field is? Not trying to blow smoke up your backside but you come across quite educated with a broad knowledge.
Initially I completed a BA majoring in history, but somehow ended up in accounting and did a masters in that. Currently doing another masters, this time in history, really just for fun and because it gives you access to university libraries. I mean it's a pretty ****ing expensive library membership, but I only do one unit every second trimester and they don't suspend your library access in the space in between. As a postgrad there's no borrowing limit, they mail me the books, and you get reply paid envelopes to return them (this is UNE). Plus it also puts some structure around your reading, and when you get a good unit co-ordinator it's awesome being able to bounce ideas off them and discuss various historical issues.
At this rate I'll finish at retirement age and might go on to do a PhD!

I quite enjoyed that, but yes it was a long time ago. Funnily enough I was listening to "The Rest is History" podcast a little while ago and Dominic Sandbrook dismissed it as "the kind of book a businessman buys in the airport before getting on a long flight", which I thought was a little unfair.

Well I bought it to go into a mental health hospital lol. I think it lost me when he wrote about Homo sapiens killing off Neanderthals, which was the general consensus before DNA studies found Neanderthal DNA in humans of today. After that I thought that there’s bound to be other things that aren’t up with the current science. Makes me wonder though, what we believe now will probably be adjusted in the future through scientific breakthroughs.

Im a late adopter of history and am now fascinated by it. I can only do audiobooks and podcasts though because my mind wanders when I read I find myself re reading every page to try and absorb it.

Any recommendations? I listened to power and thrones lately which was pretty interesting, but it doesn’t really knuckle down on individual stories too much but it’s a good summation of the Middle Ages.
