I had a Melways edition #1 from 1966 or something like that. I had to drive from Malvern to Rowville in about 1980 to have dinner at a girl's house. Took me an hour to get there although I didn't let on. She asked if I used the freeway.

I bought a new Melways the next day.

Twist in the tale: I drove through Rowvile today - right past her street. I even remembered it as I went past.

Nah, I had a Melbourne UBD once. Totally useless. The maps were OK but if you asked for an address most people would say Map 80, G7 of some sh!t like that. It did not translate to UBD. In sydney if you asked somebody for their Melways reference they'd just go cross-eyed and start talking about rugby league as if it meant something.

A bit of advice... Always carry a catcher's mitt and a ball. That way the bat doesn't arouse nearly as much suspicion.

Funnily enough, "I know a guy" who was randomly pulled over and Vic Pol asked (when they saw items on the front seat), what their intention was.

His response was, "I might get the urge to practice my baseball when I find a good sized property".

My brother used to ride his bike around carrying his air rifle in a Grey-Nicholls cricket bat cover (the barrel stuck out the end was hardly noticable).
