Yeah, so this is actually emblematic of a worldwide phenomenon in the Spotify era.

There's a bloke called Will Page, former chief economist of Spotify, who points out that, despite what you think algorithms would do - push the most popular stuff to be even more popular - it has made popular music increasingly regional. The biggest acts in Italy are now Italians singing in Italian. The biggest acts in Poland are Polish singing in Polish (rapping in Polish apparently). The biggest acts in Germany are, well, you get the drift.

So if Taylor Swift is popular with one demographic, well, that's just kinda how music is these days.

Fantastic songwriter, in the sense that she's clearly got a knack for writing music with a broad public appeal. N

She writes songs that people living in Columbus, Canberra, Colchester or Cologne can have a few drinks and dance around to/get sad to on a Friday night.

Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins had a similar ability in the 90s.

Not really my cuppa tea but I respect the bejesus out of her and don’t begrudge her success at all.
I saw her up close and personal on her first tour of Australia in a half full Billboard. She put on a very good show. She was blowing up hugely around the world at that time (2009 had the best selling album according to the Billboard charts) and rather than cancelling small club shows in favour of much bigger shows she honoured her commitment and played the small shows.
