It is crazy how cheap a house was in my dad's time, even as a ratio of what he was earning was still staggering, he was able to pay off his house in under 10 years as the only income earner with a family of four kids. That lifestyle is completely dead now and we wonder why our population is going backwards without migration. It has been a dereliction of their duty for governments to allow this to happen.

Negative gearing needs to go from residential housing, allow it for shares or apartment complexes or commercial property.
Not just houses tas. 15 bucks for a pint in melb is obscene.

Stamp duty is a ruse but is land tax any more palatable?

It’s the same thing.

Don’t mind paying tax stamp duty, but 10% is massive.

First home buyers need to get enough money together to get a deposit and then they have to cover stamp duty as well, which leaves most short so then they get hit with mortgage insurance….unless they come from money. The system is set up so the majority of people end up in debt for their whole lives.

Its flat out wrong.

Not really. Land tax you continue to pay. Stamp duty is one off.

Dutton going in to bat for him.

Dutton is either,
-a fool.
-out of touch.
-all of the above.

Firstly theres no votes to be had on this stance, the public are completely out of step with this direction and it paints him as archaic as his predecessor abbott who commented pell should be knighted!

He wasn’t alone. A few from the Libs put statements out praising Pell

It’s mental.

Even if he wasn’t a peodo he enabled them and rose though the ranks of the church because he created a legal brick wall capping the compensation for survivors. Disgusting human.
Even the most sympathetic off reviews said he either knew, 'or should have known' (the sympathetic escape clause), about the abuse.
Disgusting human, whose failure to support victims who went to him in good faith was the last straw for many.

He valued advancing his career and protecting the image of the church ahead of protecting young kids and vulnerable people...

'All of the above' seems to be the correct answer.
It's a bit hard to tell whether Dutton is arguing this from a genuinely held belief, or is he just continuing with the culture wars bullshit whereby he feels compelled to defend anything or anyone that progressive voices criticise. Maybe a mixture of both?

The lunatic right wing still can’t cut through the basic character of your average Aussie (and I do mean this from a multicultural perspective) And unfortunately for Dutton and his followers as long as they have Darth Vader’s helmet stand as their leader, they’re going nowhere 🙄

The LAPD killed a black man on the 3rd of January, the footage has just been released. The cops have him on the ground and they keep saying “stop resisting“, looks like he’s stiffing up his body. He’s saying “help me”, then he says “they’re going to George Floyd me”, then a cop pulls out a taser and tasers the man almost non stop.

Edit- He died a few hours later. You can see in the video when they went too far with the taser.

There will be riots over this.

Not sure what video you watched but it must have been very different to the one i saw.

Nothing in that video was over the top. The officer on the bike was very accommodating and was basically letting him do whatever he wanted so that he would feel comfortable (as long as he sat on the ground). Then he took off. He resisted arrest the entire time. Clearly he was coked out of his mind - even shouting to others that they were fake cops. He had about 100 chances just to settle down and listen. the officer said "stop resisting or I'll tase you" 14 times before actually doing it. 14.

Each pull of the trigger releases a jolt that lasts 5 secs. It took 5 for him to be subdued. There is no recommendation given the individual reaction to being tased. Obvious exceptions to elderly, pregnant women or children. Nothing looks excessive here. People can die from being tased. It does happen which is while it's bow called "less-lethal".

Nothing will come of that incident. I assume the police department will be sued but I do not see how that incident can be seen as excessive force applied. You'd be hard pressed to find a more patient police officer in that situation. Especially when dealing with an individual that is on drugs, fled a traffic incident and then fled again into oncoming traffic.

Perpetuating the issue when there is no sign of it makes it worse for everyone.

I don’t care what he did before, though it’s obvious hes mentally unwell.

I’ve watched the whole video. They had him under control before the first taze, and then he was way more compliant after that. There was absolutely no reason for the cop to continue to taze him after that.

I’d post the video but not sure if I’m allowed. They killed him. He was unarmed and they had him on the ground. They used excessive force.

He was resisting. He was still struggling to break out from being held down by 4/5 police officers. Even when being tased he refused to put his arms behind his back and close enough to be put in handcuffs.

It wasn't excessive at all. They did exactly what they are trained to do in that situation. I know it's the norm to see a black individual being restrained by police and automatically think they've been wronged but he wasn't. Even to the point that each tase was a pull of the trigger not a holding down of the trigger. It is unfortunate that he passed away. It's awful for his family, the police that need to live with it and anyone that was their to witness it. There are complications that can happen when using them which is why over 1000 people have died since 2001. That's a bigger issue and whether or not they should be allowed and the training they receive.

It's also very easy to say from your computer chair and with the benefit of hindsight. Typically I'll go into these videos thinking that the police have done the wrong thing because why else has it come across my desk. Non-issue in my opinion. No follow-up required. Terrible end result that could have been avoided if he listened just once out of the 100+ times he was warned.

The moral of the story is:

don't do drugs...don't do drugs and drive...don't run away from a crime scene...don't ignore police officers...don't run away from an officer...don't resist arrest...don't resist arrest when a taser is brought out...don't resist arrest when being tased multiple times...don't tell others that they aren't real police officers...
A lot of things went against him.

There was no need to tase him. He wasn’t a threat at that point. It was excessive. Id be very surprised if the police force would be happy with the conduct.

He was a danger to himself and others. He crashed a car. He ran away. He was given the opportunity after that to sit on the ground and comply. He didn't. He ran away into oncoming traffic. Multiple officers could not detain him and put him in cuffs without using it. He could have easily shruggled free and ran into oncoming traffic again, got hit or caused another car to serve into someone, another car, or a wall/building. I suggest you look at police officer taser guidelines because it was more than okay to use it and if anything he got more freedom than acceptable.

LAPD definitely do things differently.

My first 24 hours ever in the US (was in LA)was like a chapter out of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

At one point my travel companion and I ended up in an after hours club (illegal nightclubs that trade after 2am shutdown of legitimate clubs) with people we’d met out earlier in the night, the club was raided by the cops and they had us all kneeling against a wall with our hands above our heads while they brandished drawn firearms at us.

Needless to say they didn’t appreciate my mate calling them pig campaigners.

Luckily they decided it was too difficult to deal with a couple of foreigners so they let us go in the middle of some sketchy industrial area.

And then there was the incident with the transexual cabdriver and her girlfriend but that’s another story….
