What's the worst place you've visited overseas?

For me LA is the clear number 1
It's been about 25 years since I was there (I've kept true to my vow never to return) but Athens tops the list for me. "Highlights" of my 3 day stay:
  • Taxi driver from the airport trying to charge 4x the fare on the meter to cover "each passenger and your bags"
  • Paid a premium for a hotel room with a view of the Acropolis but was told on check-in it was unavailable with no possibility of a refund
  • Hotel toilets that didn't flush
  • Slightly aggressive stray cats and dogs everywhere
  • Bring unashamedly ripped off in bars and restaurants due to being a tourist
  • Having to step over a dead junkie at the bottom of the escalator in the Metro station
  • Physically fighting off pickpockets on the Metro
  • Check-in queue at the airport that went outside of the terminal building and into the carpark
I'm sure the place has improved since then but f***ed if I'm ever going back.

Honorable mention - Struga, North Macedonia. Holds itself out as a "popular tourist destination". It's not, it's a sh*thole.

Yeah, LA sucks.

My worst cities;
  • LA
  • Madrid
  • Tianjin
  • Orlando (outside the theme parks, that place sucks)

I am surprised you didn't get the "all four wheels stayed on" surcharge in the taxi.

Dude, you need to haggle in Greece like it is the dark ages and tell people you are not American or English. :p

LA is great if you've got cash and know people.

Worst place I've ever been is probably Portadown in the north of Ireland.

Just a campaigner of a joint.

Dude, I did haggle and paid the price that was on the meter. No doubt it was still overs but I was earning USD in those days and the Drachma was worth f all.

The only time I didn't haggle was when I was overcharged at a restaurant due to an "error on the menu" and the owner decided to call 4 very large gentlemen from the kitchen to come and stand around my table to persuade me to pay the bill. Discretion being the better part of valour and all that ...

Easy mistake to make, They were only there to deliver the complimentary raki and baklava

I’ve always had an absolute blast in LA.

But I wouldn’t recommend driving through Compton as a white guy in a white mustang convertible with skis hanging out the back. I’d taken a wrong turn in pre GPS days - pulled into a gas station to ask directions and got told if I valued my safety I needed to get the **** out ASAP.

Anywhere is fun with cash and locals! I certainly had some fun but just found so many people rude as **** and the place is dirty and hard to get around.

I went to the magistrates court today for a report I have to write up

I saw about 3 cases in 2 hours

Eager to get back it was fascinating. One of the cases the police prosecutor was really under prepared which is what I’ll be writing my reform under.

Which one?

Melbourne

I spent a fair bit of time in the Glasgow Sheriff's Court - which is the busiest court in Europe.

Fascinating places.

Weirdly I wasn’t a fan of Lausanne in Switzerland.

Edit- I was thinking more about my experience vrs expectation, that’s not what you asked. I had a bit of travel fatigue when there though and there wasn’t much going on. It’s absolutely beautiful to look at though.

KL in Malaysia would be my answer, but again that’s just my experience because I was stuck there after the Iceland volcano eruption grounded all the planes and the security at the airport with their machine guns were a tad over the top.
