I had an old hippie mate who travelled thru Afghanistan in the very early 70s. He said it probably wasn't the same for women but he travelled thru some wild tribal locations and was looked after by people who probably ended up becoming the Taliban. Because back then their millenia old traditions of hospitality were still in play. The idea that 50 years later they'd be capturing travellers for ransom would have appalled those old psychos...

I talked to (Scottish) British soldiers who had done tours there when I was a journo - usually guys with serious PTSD at a place called Hollybush House

Some of the stories were wild - like going out to visit the remotest valleys possible to talk to elders and discovering they hadn't heard about the invasion and presumed all the choppers and planes were Soviet.

Then those elders telling them about people in even more remote valleys who had been sealed off from the world for as long as anyone could remember and had a real North Sentinel Island attitude to keeping themselves sealed off.

Apparently these communities were often Nestorian Christians and people practising localised mystical versions of Islam who had decided centuries ago that any contact with the outside world would mean their death and enslavement.

Stuff like the below was attributed to them: locals believed they kept/were allied with/actually were giants and the like. More likely the folks themselves fed these legends as a way of keeping themselves safe.

When I was younger, in the early 90s, that was one part of the world I'd have liked to go to. Its opne of the places Gurfjieff and his crew ended up in. Sounds amazing.

There's a valley out the back of Sydney that is almost impossible to find. It has a two or three metre wide opening at the top and its about a metre wide to get into it. It is in the middle of some really dry country but holds a wet patch of wet rainforest. Maybe less than a hectare in size all up.

There would be places like that all thru those mountains in central Asia. Been stories about spots like that for centuries. No way you'd speak to the outside world if you lived in one I reckon.
