Moving house. It's astounding how much stuff we seem to have crammed into our current 60sqm apt.
Fun feature of moving: we have two overlapping leases, and hence two houses and two sets of keys. On auto-pilot this morning I took the wrong keys and locked myself out. [emoji108]

Go sleep in the empty house. :D

So the NZ PM is pregnant...........

I wonder what would've happened if Gillard got pregnant in the middle of her time as PM. Somewhat difficult to fathom.
I will admit - I thought a bad thing... I wondered who'd look after the kid during the day etc... Then I read that her partner will be a stay at home Dad! Obviously!

Yeah the headline was like wtf. Apparently she's 37 and was told they'd need idk IVF or something, then it happened anyway? Good for her I guess, can't wait forever if it's something you want to do.

I did do a bit of a double take at my own reaction though. Like it's fine in any other job, and if she were a queen it'd be an expectation. But somehow I baulk at the idea of a PM having a baby..?

Hush Vicwegian.
And also Grand Final Friday... Sandgroper :p

As far as dates go, we got independence from the British parliament when the Australia Act was enacted on March 3, 1986. Not really a convenient time of year for a public holiday, what with Easter and all around that time as well, but at least it's a date that makes sense. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_Act_1986

I think one in January is still ideal. Why not the 18th when they actually landed?
Because it has exactly the same problem as Jan 26.. so why bother moving it at all?

The problem with January 26 is it's basically like celebrating the start of a world war, as far as our Indigenous peoples are concerned.

Fair enough. I'd just prefer it as a PH in summer

it's interesting in a country where people are so passionate about their state that the national holiday is about the establishment of a penal colony on the east coast of Australia (the eastern seaboard all being called NSW until QLD was drawn up in the 1850s). I mean, what's that got to do with South Australia, a colony established on the basis of having nothing to do with convict labour whatsoever?

Ideally the National Holiday should have been about the Federation of 6 different Colonies into one Federation but that horse has bolted

ethan there's like 3 public holidays in the space of a week in summer

There's literally NYD, Australia Day and then nothing until March

There's literally Easter, ANZAC day, then nothing til Queen's Birthday, and then nothing until Grand Final Friday. That's one PH between April and September. There are nine in the first half of the year, and only four in the second half of the year.

If you like it in January, or think more of them should be in summer, that's fine, but if your best argument is based on the frequency of public holidays then you should probably re-think it.

That's not my argument. Just pointing out that there aren't that many in summer. Most are autumn IIRC
