not to ruin the thread with morbidty but i used to be really scared of death.... and used to worry about what its like when it happens...

Then a mate goes ..have you ever had an operation? or been knocked out? ...do you remember it? its like a switch, it flicks off and you wont know anything.

weirdly it made me feel better about it all.

i guess all theres left to do now is leave a mark .. an afl career didnt happen so plan b now :p

I used to be the same until we read one of Socrates' speeches in school where he pointed out that no one actually knew if death was bad or not and named some of the cool things that might happen afterwards. It's the dying part that seems like it would suck, bring on euthanasia I say.

one day they will figure out that its mineable and full of a substance we need to live... then the fight will be on to colonise it first.

you reckon the chinese found the usa flag and kicked it over?
I'm sure it's full of resources. I'm sure Mars is, too.

I'll be surprised if we ever reach a point where it's economically feasible to mine on the moon, though.

dosent the antacrtic treaty expire soon? Plenty of mining to be had there for nations of questionable morals... less travel time than to the moon too
I actually thought it had expired already- wasn't it a 50 year moratorium signed in 1959?

In any case, Antarctica is the last basically unspoiled (ozone layer aside) place on the planet and I sincerely hope it is left well alone.

we can only hope!!

dosent it have like the biggest natural gas and oil reserves on the planet? or estimated?

its funny, they reckon it would cost $100 a barrell to ship oil from antarctica.... its worth about 80$ a barrell right now. If we ever got to desperation stakes and they need to use it sell your car!

I always had a theory that we would become the next sheiks in Australia once all the oil had been exhausted and Uranium was the only way forward. The worlds biggest super power on the back of uranium post oil. We are sitting on all of it! Arent we the only exporters of Uranium? Once people get over the fear they will realise it makes sense.

That robot had an ass built on to it so when it found the flag it could shit all over it and burn it.

Antarctica has a lot of coal, and there is quite a bit of oil and gas in the Ross Sea. It probably wouldn't be economical to mine the coal. No actual exploration has been done to estimate how much oil and gas there is though.

We don't actually have that much uranium, there is something like 75 years worth left at current usage. Less if more nations build reactors. The main nuclear fuel of the future will be thorium because there is a lot of that around, we just need to work out how to make a reactor work with it.

Hey I did a uni project on thorium reactors this semester!

Thorium reactos when properly researched and ready to go will be sooo good for supplying energy. They use both thorium (which is incredibly abundant) and the waste products from uranium reactors in order to make the thorium fissile.

It's a lot safer and less prone to meltdown, and the waste itself cannot be used for weaponry and is a lot safer in general.

Pretty much. From what I remember, it's in really common stuff like gravel and similar things.

Ripping some facts from the project:
  • Enough thorium on Earth to power the planet for 440000 years
  • Takes roughly 1/33 of the amount of uranium to power the same amount (for a 100MW reactor anyway)
  • all thorium can be used, compared to 0.7% of mined uranium
  • 5560% more efficient than using uranium
  • much much cheaper to build the reactor
I have a lot more, but basically thorium is the shit and we should all hope serious advances are made with it.
