Sorry I didn't mean you as in you personally. Haha, all good man, thanks for asking!!
Haha, I know you didn't, what I meant was that I've probably through many of the places now so badly flooded but the images of the Cataract particularly hit home as I definitely remember going there.

It was a great place in 2012, and certainly nothing like the raging torrent those pictures depict.

All good down here, only Ouse and New Norfolk have been effected in the south. The North is absolutely copping it. To think, many of us Tasmanians were celebrating as we didn't have any major bushfires this summer for once!

Thanks for asking Doss
Hopefully the northern Bigfooty Bombers are alright!

Yeah I understand, you won't remember this at all but here is an example, the train bridge would be about 7 metres from the water level in the street view, the river mouth would be about 40 m wide. That is what it normally looks

like, https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-41...h_QyGqctVjJM-ntN0Q!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

Then at the moment it is like this taken from the train bridge,

Probably doesn't mean much but was one of the photos which showed the scale of the flooding

You guys alright flood-wise? I know they're more in the north of Tassie and (I think) you're more Hobart-based but still...

Actually Tassieboy, you're Launceston. Those pictures of the Cataract Gorge were incredible- and scary. You safe?

Yeah all good my way mate, Hobart is bloody wet but not flooding fortunately.

Yes it's extraordinary stuff. I only went for a walk from home to the Gorge on the weekend and crossed the South Esk River on a little path; the river was barely a trickle. Crazy traffic is just the greatest inconvenience for me. Unfortunately lots of farmers and people living beside the rivers haven't been so lucky. It actually hasn't rained that much in Launceston, only about 50mm, but it's obviously been much heavier in river catchment areas.

Positively, at least the energy crisis is over, until Basslink is restored and we sell excess power to Australia.

It'll be back to normal next week, unless we get heavy tomorrow.

So I just found out an alarming statistic for America.

From 1996-2014 Australia had 5312 gun deaths. In the past 6 months the US has had over 6000 gun deaths

To put that in some perspective...

The US has about 12-13 times our population. 1996-2014 inclusive is 19 years, or 228 months.

So they've had more gun deaths in a six month period than we've had in 228 months- so over 40 times the rate. Even allowing for the much larger population, it's pretty incredible.

"The only way you can defend yourself against a lunatic with a gun is if you have a gun yourself though!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!one!"

It's just crazy. I think Toby Ziegler summed it up perfectly in this statement:

Exactly. Aren't too many bears, mountain lions and aggrieved Native Americans looking to scalp the pale faces roaming around the frontier these days.
Are all those mean Mexicans trying to scale fences and swim the Rio Grande though!

In a 1791 context it wasn't an especially out of place thing for the times.

225 years later, however...

This. No need for militias these days when you are protected by one of the strongest armies in the world! Although Americans who are pro-gun are paranoid about their federal government. In summary; they're a crazy bunch.
