So 2 of my ex students, 2 guys who I tried so hard for years to help and get them out of the constant river of shit they so willingly dived into have been charged with murder.
Makes me question so many things right now.

Man that sucks, sorry to hear that mate. I know that you probably tried your best but that might not make you feel any better. You can't control what they did, don't beat yourself up too much.

appreciate it. However it seems another one of my boys, nice nice kid died a day or two ago as well. Terrible week.

Dude, that's a tough week! Have you got a support network around you who you can talk to? Try not to let this get you down, you can't win every battle, even if you try your best. Keep on helping the kids, you don't know the ones that you've helped.

Yeah I do and I know that at the end of the day everyone makes their own choices but I still can't help wondering if I could have done more.

****ing drugs man.

Turns out he was getting clean but hanged himself.
What a waste.

I have a question for anyone that's advanced with Excel.

I've setup a document that uses pivot tables to look at info and summarise it, then put into graphs; pretty straight forward (example):

View attachment 274149

But I want to insert multiple columns and have the pivot summarise them both as potential "Column Label" values.

So using the above example, rather than having "Jonathan Goldstein/John Francis Daley" I want to be able to have two separate colums (one name in each), and have the pivot recognise that both names have an average score of 6.

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers.
I use excel a bit, but I don't have a lot of experience with pivot tables (I've basically only used them in the draft pick predictor thing). I'd probably noob out and change the source data using a combination of TRANSPOSE and SPLIT, and instead of a pivot table I'd use filters, or the FILTER formula. Do you use googlesheets at all? It has it's drawbacks but it's easier for sharing and collaborating than excel.

You can tell how the day at Uni is going when the Princess texts you at 1pm to ask you to put a bottle of white wine in the fridge so it's cold when she gets home

the hell is coffin/renaud doing above fincher and spielberg

You... misspelled Alien 3. That's the only way I can reconcile this.

But yeah, nice to see someone else who does that. I've been rating everything I see on IMDB since '06, and it's been damn helpful in reminding me if I've seen something or not. Or to demonstrate whether a film has grown or deteriorated in my memory (I don't touch the rating without a rewatch).

I agree with Fly, I would change the source data. I haven't used the functions she mentions but a cheat method (depending on whether it is practical to muck around with your original spreadsheet) would be to insert an extra column, highlight the first column and use the Text to columns feature from the Data tab. Choose "Delimited" rather than "Fixed" columns, and put the backslash in as the delimiter. This will put the names in separate columns.

I would then use auto filter on the new column to leave out blank lines, then copy the names from the new column and and paste down the bottom in the first column, then copy the data from the other columns and paste down the bottom in the corresponding columns (not in the new column though, which you can then delete.)

Then you can use the pivot table as normal.

I had to check out the SPLIT formula, it's pretty cool! I may have used it a long time ago but I had forgotten it. This article I was also reading showed how you can use SUBSTITUTE as well if you are looking for e.g. a second backslash to split at rather than the first, a nice workaround which I will note for future reference:). http://www.excelfunctions.net/split-string-in-excel.html

ive got something that sticks in my claw...

Lifes all about moments right?, just a series of moments that cant be taken back once they have been had.

Say you make the choice to cheat - to dope up in the Olympics to win the 100m final... you get THE moment of all moments , you are the fastest man on the planet, you get to stand on the dias infront of the world, get a shiney gold medal, get to sing your anthem, get showered with adulation... This moment, you have just had, can never be taken away from you.

so what, in 6 months time they found out you cheated... throw your medal in an envelope and give it to some other guy.. you are in discrace, so? the Olympics are over.. no one cares now.. you still had that epic moment and no one can take it from you, they took the medal.. but the moment still exists..

I have a plan.

next olympics, every dirty rotten cheat gets dragged back onto the dias to a chorus of boos while the medal gets taken from their neck as their flag reverses back down the pole.

sure they still had their moment..but this most horrible of moment should go someway to readressing the balance and parking itself front and centre in the mind infront of the other one.

all these cheats, have their great moment in lights, but when they get busted, they have their come uppance in dark solitude... i think there needs to be a way for their come uppance to be in lights infront of the world as well, the view of the sporting world gives you your glory moemnts, now let the same view take it away.

I hope Gatlin doesnt win today.

I hope that Jobe doesn't have to appear on the 2016 Brownlow night stage, to a chorus of boos, with his medal being taken away by Mitchell and Cotchin.

It depends what drives the athlete really. Of course there is that nice moment of triumph.

But Once they are convicted of drug cheating all records of that accomplishment are erased. For many their reputation being destroyed and left in tatters, no one cheering for you, you are always the villain, everyone always cheers for the other guy, it would be a horrible fate.

Im not an athlete, but I know what drives me whenever I compete or try to accomplish something. Its to be remembered, for people to remember your name. For me and im sure many others it would be to be remembered in a positive light in addition to that.

These drug cheats have a fate that in the short term when their name is known it is always in a negative light, they are derided at every opportunity, just look at these current Olympics as proof. In the long term with their name scrubbed from the history books they are largely forgotten.

I reckon in most sports you are forgotten.. but the 100m - its the biggest event, the biggest thing - even the drug cheat becomes a chapter in its rich history. Everyone still knows Johnson, Gatlin, ect

in 100 years time Usain bolt will still have his name in the record books, and people will know his name. He will be a trivia question.

Gatlin (hopefully) wont be remembered.

i know you are right, and im probably playing devils avocate a bit, but i mean in this particular event - you get the me me me person - the hero, the guy who will do anything to be the man, number one, its all about you, the narssicist.

you could almost... almost put a case forward that being known in infamy is still being known. Better to be known for something than nothing at all?

Theres a school of thought Phelps is the greatest olympian of all time but i think its skewed via weight of medals...

How many gold would Bolt have won if these events were available?:
50m sprint, 100m running backwards, 100m skipping, 100m running sideways, 400m sprinting / skipping / hopping / sidestepping medley , 4 x 100 of all previous….
In other words, surely Bolt’s just as good as Phelps…. just has less available events.
Plus… any man on earth can run. The Africans have proved over the years you don’t even need shoes.
Not everyone on earth has access to a 50m pool to practice swimming.

I reckon Bolt has to be the GOAT.

ps id love to see bolt over the 110 hurdles as well as the 200m, would be an ace treble!

IT all depends on your perspective and value I guess.

How prestigious is the 100m? Some would say its THE event, to be crowned the fasted man alive. Pretty big. Bolt has done it back to back to back. Its never been done and may never be replicated.

Phelps has won more medals, a majority of them gold so its not padding his stats with bronzes. He enters a ridiculous number of events and wins against the best of the rest of the world. It would take a tremendous amount of energy and preparation to be the worlds best at every event and his medal tally will never be replicated.

Both are champions I don't think there needs to be a debate really. Phelps is the greatest swimmer and Bolt is the greatest sprinter.
Trying to claim anything more plays into a persons subjective bias.

There's a school of thought (mine! I don't know if anyone else subscribes) that this weight of events is ridiculous. Running backwards would rightly be seen as farcical, the only reason swimming backwards is an event is it was considered a viable technique until freestyle showed up and demonstrated itself superior, but whiners weren't willing to give up the stroke they were invested in. Axe everything bar distances and obstacles.
