I don't think a total black out is necessary, but if they stop labelling every little thing as a politically motivated attack on western values that is the responsibility of all Muslims everywhere that's be a good start.

In Aus we tend to be very conservative about linking any incidents to terrorist organisations or motivations, but internationally their local politicians and law enforcement do label it as terrorism, so then it becomes part of the 'story' that gets reported.

If there is a puff of smoke the first thing our media says is, 'we are not yet sure if it's an act of terror or politically motivated'.. they already sew the seed

I guess that depends what media outlets you listen to. I don't get a lot of commercial news but from my perspective the Lindt cafe thing and the Burke street thing were reported on as a hostage situation and a tragedy, and both turned out to be unstable with chequered histories, both were known to police.

Id be all for not naming those who commit the act.
I assume it is done to shame them, to show "their story"

id be very happy with no names, forget them, wipe them from history. They don't become a martyr for the cause, they are simply forgotten.
Yeah that. I don't want to know who they are, or why they did it. Knowing why someone does a thing they do is only relevant if you're trying to establish motive or educate them to behave differently, neither of which are important to the general public and doesn't need to be reported. Just go with senseless tragedy and focus on the victims and the healing.

You're absolutely spot on.

Unfortunately the media, on the whole, are too self important and desperate for ratings to adhere to such a thing.

im working night shift at the moment, i put my hand up to do a month as cover - its my dream, working solo between the others of 8pm til 6am. i love it, just left to my own devices to think, write.. and crucially not be in contact with other people..

generally i sleep most of the day, so i havent been watching any tv or keeping up with the current events - which is also a plus.

Anyhow, last night i got a call to go down into the car park cellar - i go down the escilator and walk round the corner.. hear CRASHHHH BANGG a car ploughs through the automatioc glass doors and butts up against the escilator!

i did a double take... figured it was one of the oldies who hit the wrong pedal, i saw a few security already at the top so i kept on my way - they dont usually like gawkers...

So i did my cellar thing, and went over the other end of the complex to do another task, took around 5-10 mins, came back up along the gaming floor, i noticed around 20 cops standing by the fountains, as i kept walking i i saw these special ops stlye cops wearing all black - they crash tackled some guy to the ground and were pulverising him..

TBH i didnt link the two, im used to seeing people getting grabbed off the floor - granted its done by securitry - but i was in a no sleep haze, not at my sharpest.

I told my partner when i got home this morning - asked her if she thought it was the same guy, she said maybe?

anyhow i went to sleep, woke up this afternoon, see it all over the news - ANOTHER crazy had been driving up the footpaths on swantson street, smashing bank windows.. obv the same loser?

anyway, i had a bit of late onset shellshock - i was pretty much twice intertwinded with this clown, i mean, he could have run me down once, could have had an explosive.. anything..

either way, it just reinforces my feelings that i cant work here anymore, its just a hive for whats wrong with the world..

ive been job hunting for a little while now but it just so happens my window for what i can do is pretty narrow, be it because of the salary i require, or the experiences i have, or the location it can be at - ive found i job i really want, but im only semi qualified - lets just say its a two tier position, i have the skills to monster the first side, the second side, i have fleeting links of experience.

question - whats best in an application? to fudge the numbers and try to link all of your working experiences to taylor each key critera? or go hard on the things you are good at, and be honest, saying you lack experiece in certain criteia but have personality traits that allow you to adapt and learn quickly?

ie, lie or be honest?

sorry for the stream of stuff - night shift brain out.

Having a brush with disaster like that can be pretty unsettling.

My fiancee was out on Sydney Road the night Jill Meagher disappeared. Only about 300 metres from where she disappeared. I picked her at about 1am...right around the time that Jill was murdered.

As for job applications, go hard with what you're good at is my advice.

Pretty much this, though don't say you lack experience. They'll probably pick up on the criteria you don't have strong experience so be sure to reflect the characteristics that show how you can make it work (experience you do have plus quick learner, adaptable, clear thinker under pressure, decisive, whatever)

Never say you lack experience - be creative - if you've ever done anything remotely similar to the second part talk up how those skills/learnings can be transferred/applied.

i usually say somethign along the lines of 'i havent had direct expierence in .............. other than these fleeting instances, however i strongly believe if your procedures and processes are sound, anybody should be able to step into them if they have these relevant personal traits ........, which i obviously possess ;)

compare the media coverage of the recent "terrorist attacks" in the U.K. to tonight's Grenfell Tower tragedy where 6 are dead, 90+ injured, people still missing.

oh, you haven't heard about it? yeah - it's not "terror" related.

thats the other thing they do with these things, gotta give them a catchy name that every agency can use - to leave a tragedy stamp through time, like marker points of doom

the london inferno
the hoddle street massacre
9/11
ash wednesday
black saturday
the gas crisis
the black plauge

what if channel 9 runs with ash wedesday but channel seven goes with charred wednesday? do they fight to the death the see who wins and gets their tragedy label used forever?

exactly right about needing a catchy name for a tragedy: Bali Bombing, Global Financial Crisis, '99 Prelim

do you remember much about the police murders of gary silk and rod miller? where was it? what month? how it came about? the perp?

what if atr the time it had a more marker point label like the darkest day of police.. or something that people were to remember, would it have more of a place in the minds?

anyway, genuine question - whats with gate? ie water gate, spy gate .....gate for anything newsworthy. whats with the gate suffix?

is there actually etomology to it? or just funny media thing to chuck on the end of words in the case of dodgy happenings

Watergate was the original and they just stuck it on anything from there.
