I’m kicking back today and enjoying Sunday like I haven’t for a long time.

Yesterday was full on. Emptying out the lock up with the family (the second living space in the rental is filled to the brim now). Then we sat down and watched the footy. For two hours the pain I was feeling physically was forgotten.

Today I’ve been listening to David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and musing about life. I’ve looked at The Age, the crosswords and I’ll water my plants later. I’m basking in the glory of victory. Go Blues.
You don't do much to help out at home from the take of it. Lazy

Robbo‘s thinking of going back to University. May as well rack up a huge debt with no prospect of ever paying it back. Gotta love Australia.
What subjects you gonna do Robbo?

to think in jan I was ready to throw in pharmacy and go study sports journalism - serious! Phew
Phew all right. It'll still be there when you're ready for a change post covid.

Well Leeds United have pretty much ruined most of the happiness and Buzz I got from our win at Geelong.

I wish I would stop getting so emotionally invested in sports, especially association football.

Feel like going to sleep now but I am too cranky/sulking at the moment

Come on Elmer.

Support the thread.

The Championship is back then. Sunderland will be back soon.👍

It will be post grad because I already have one of those useless BAs (from the Uni for the working class LaTrobe). I’m a bit worried to research Mr LaTrobe because we might have to change its name. If we do I’d vote for a woman of distinction. BlueGum University has a ring to it.

I’m also a qualified Library Technician which I did at Vic Uni. I’m blowing my 🎺 now.

What would I study?

I’ve got a short attention span so a 12 month course in journalism would be ok. If Bolt can do it, anybody can.

Being like an elephant (in reference to their long memory) why not a three year degree in anthropology. This Government thinks that‘s a useless qualification. Hit em where it hurts.

Dr Robbo has a ring to it. A PhD would be interesting. Picking a subject for a thesis? One option is ‘Why are Conservative Governments useless and why do people keep electing them?” No doubt that’s been done to death.🤔

Seriously, my grandfather has a migrant story (refugee is an accurate definition) worth telling. He came to Australia in 1925 in search of a better life for himself and his family. He achieved his goal however he was locked up in an internment camp during WWII for close to two years because he was born on the other side. It appears to have a modern day link don’t cha think?

Ha, I have one of those degrees from there too.

Sounds like a great project for retirement Robbo.

My Great Uncles were allowed to stay out of the POW camps as they were market gardeners and were providing food for the nation otherwise they would have been POWS in Australia as well.

My grandfather and his brother ran businesses that fed the locals. Wasn’t enough to keep them out. They were in a hot zone, Far North Queensland, which would have contributed greatly to their treatment. By the time they were jailed both were Australian citizens. You had to be an Australian citizen to own property in Australia. It didn’t matter really. They had no intention of returning to Italy and ‘felt’ Australian by then. I can‘t even think of an appropriate word/s to describe their treatment. The worst part of it would have been being interned with ‘like’ people (other Italians) who they were glad to leave behind in Italy.

Mine were in WA (Italian) 6 brothers in total, only 3 were her then, my Grandfather came later. I will have to find out the full story as to why, unless WA had less suppliers?

Probably location is the biggest factor I’d say.

If you want to look into your family history I’ve found the National Archives is a great resource. Lots of important information has been digitised and the search engine is easy to use. Just a surname (if it’s not a common name) or a surname and given name (and Bob’s your uncle, I actually had an uncle Bob).

Another great resource is Trove which is attached to the National Library. This site has digitised newspapers from all over Australia so wherever your family resided there will be a local newspaper which can provide lots of information. As an example the local paper for my family was the Cairns Post (still around today). I was able to find the announcement concerning my parent’s marriage in April 1945 but I digress. I focused on the newspapers leading up to the fall of Singapore in Feb 1942 and a little beyond that date. It was very instructive concerning the mood of the country and, not surprisingly, the authorities (Police and Military) pounced on ‘enemy aliens’ pretty much straight away.

It’s a known fact that I hate insurance companies and utilities with equal enmity. They are the scum on my boots.

I’ll save a serve for the utilities until a later time.

Let’s zero in on health insurance. I’ve forgotten the last time we claimed anything from our provider (mainly due to the fact that you couldn’t use the services that provide extras under your cover). Still can’t. These entities have been making squillions and should have returned chunks of our hard earned.

I think we pay over $400 per month for hospital and extras cover. It’s about 4 months since things were normal. Roughly $1,600. There was a bit of fanfare from our provider that it would return some of the premium. Woo hoo!

Are you sitting down? The excitement may cause you to lose your balance. The grand sum of $48 was returned. FMD.😑

You’ve got to love the Free(zer) Market. See what I did there.

As my mum said “In for a penny, in for a pound”.

We’re largely unprotected from these pirates. Think before you act people. Plenty of people out there who will fleece you of your hard earned.

I love my retired life but not today. Out of bed at 7.45am, on the road by 8.15am and it’s bloody freezing. Even my long lost friend Jack Frost has made a rare appearance.

As luck would have it the central heating unit at my brother-in-laws house decided to join him in heaven.

I sold the house and signed the paperwork on the same day as I got the news about the condition of the unit. Talk about the luck of the Irish.

It’s indicative of the pattern of my life. Between contract and settlement on my home of more than two decades the hot water service packed it in.

The moral of this story. Keep an eye out for Robbo related real estate. You’re bound to get something brand spanking new!

Robbo has had a love affair with guitars since I was a teenager. I suppose I had dreams of emulating my guitar heroes but I was never built for the uncertainty of being a musician.

I knew from the few formal lessons that I had at high school that a life as a musician was not for me. Especially when they asked me to join the school orchestra. Before I even started I quit the band.

But I was a determined bugger and, by myself, I kept at it.

I remember my brother-in-law gave me his Epiphone guitar and I played it until my fingers bled. On my 17th birthday my mum bought me another Epiphone (this time acoustic) and my fingers didn’t bleed. I bought sheet music and learned to play some of my favourite songs (if I was dexterous enough). You see I’m strictly rhythm I don’t want to make it cry and sing.

At 18 years I travelled overseas with a s**t load of money. On the way back I was determined to take advantage of the cheap shopping available in Singapore. My hair wasn’t long but I agreed to a haircut to get into the police state of Singapore.

And I found myself a shop filled with guitars. I was eclectic in my choices. One had to be an acoustic guitar and I found a Fender that sounded so good. My dream was to play bass (it’s not that hard unless you want to be John Entwistle). I found a short neck Fender Mustang bass which entranced me. Naturally I had to buy the Vox amp. It was the days before excess baggage.

On arriving at Tullamarine I am forever indebted to the customs officer who waved me through. I was up for a considerable amount of duty and she let me off.

I’ve still got the acoustic guitar which is around 45 years old. The bass and amp I swapped for money and an Akai reel to reel tape deck that I still have in a box somewhere.

Robbo has got a bit lazy in recent years and hardly picks up the couple of guitars I still own (I also own a solid body strat copy, black body with a white scratch board, two pick ups and a couple of knobs). I’m not sure why because playing music is such a positive experience.

In good news, my new place in Travancore is literally next to a purveyor of drum kits. And right up the back there are lots of guitars.😍
