And here's an interview with the evil genius:

Out for a beer tonight, one of the blokes says

"When does the Boxing Day test start?"

We were left scratching our heads.

Funniest thing since that Simpsons episode when Homer picks up the phone and says

"Operator, whats the number for 9-1-1"

Oh my....

That's ****en disgusting, I still remmeber that game 'New York defence' where you shoot down planes attacking the WTC.

Is anyone good at Psychometric tests? One thing I fear (and its not death) is psychometric tests.

Hideous shirt, hey? There's bad taste shirts then there's just sheer bad taste.

As for hem tests: been awhile since I've done one. They don't worry me greatly, except that you know people are trying to measure you/define you in some way for some reason. Why, do you have to do one soon?

Saw this article on Cracked today - about the worst actions figures.

Funny read with pictures.

Like these.

106802.jpg

"It was something of a rite of passage for boys in the late '80s/early '90s to wake up on Christmas morning and see the wrapped Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle-shaped box. In anticipation you'd tear it open, wondering what would be revealed. Your favorite Turtle? Your favorite villain? Or some fat guy eating a sandwich, with toilet paper stuck on his foot?"

Or this guy who Indy fights on the runway in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the lost ark.

106814.jpg

"That led to stuff like this, a toy of the nameless, shirtless German mechanic who fights Indy near a plane. This action figure is especially disappointing when you consider that the character's only notable feature (the fact that he was killed by a propeller blade) is in no way acknowledged here. Not even in the box art. Also because he appears to be 30 years older than in the movie and overweight."

Or Ivan Drago's wife from Rocky 4.

106850.jpg

"That's right. It's Brigitte Nielson's character from
Rocky IV, the Russian Ludmilla Drago. Who could possibly want to own an action figure based on the likeness of Ivan Drago's wife? Other than Ivan Drago?"

106816.jpg

"Yep, that's Caveman Rocky, aka Rocky wearing the costume he was wearing in that wacky commercial he was shooting at the beginning of Rocky II."

And just what you'd dream about getting for a present: the meat from Rocky2

106832.jpg

The description on Cracked simply says: This is not Photoshopped.

Slab of beer anyone?

While you're all sweltering, consider this from Korea:

Fan death is a widely held belief in South Korea and Japan[1][2] that an electric fan left running overnight in a closed room can cause the death of those inside. Fans sold in Korea are equipped with a timer switch that turns them off after a set number of minutes, which users are frequently urged to set when going to sleep with a fan on.[3]

A truly great urban legend seemingly started by the government to conserve energy.

UFO over Scotland? You be the judge.

Apparently not. It was also shot from sort of government rescue vehicle too.

A French Kid's clothing company actually ran this ad in Amercia.... not realising there was a naked ban strolling up the beach in the background. Right click to view.

Somewhat OT for the random discussion thread, but worthy of discussion none the less.

I get a call from my step daughter Boxing Day - she's not OK, I can tell, but she wants to talk to mum.

I patch her through to mum who is at work.

I get a call back from mum (wifey) and the situation becomes clearer - she and her husband moved up to Noosa 5 years ago for footy and have made a life for themselves.

When they first made the move, Ali, who had worked in the disability (read chipscab) industry looked after two young girls with cerebal palsey-like symptoms for the first two years.

See where this is going?

My S/D is inconsolable, an entire family laid bare.

Through tears I try to rationalise something that is not rational - I, myself was gutted and I knew none of these people.

And yet somehow we did - somehow we do - make sense out of it all, we deal with it.

Until the local news comes on the next night and they have neighbours banging on about hearing the 'screams of the dying children' and seeing the mother through the windows trying to save them.

My stepdaughter who is 25 and has 2 infants didn't sleep for a week, and if she did, all she could hear was those screams.

I'm sorry if you disagree, but I am seething at this 'report' and it has taken me till now to even talk about it such was my anger.

I lived through Ash Wednesday and Black Saturday, and I have never heard of worst reporting in my life.

Disgraceful.

IMO there's a belief in the media that the general public want to know all the gory details of tragedies such as this and as a result they seek out to sensationalize such events without regard to the privacy of the victims or the feelings of those around them.

I wont pretend to know if there genuinely is such a demand for such information but will say I don't really won't to know anymore than the basics and would prefer that the media are conscious of how they impact on people close to such tragedies

Btw, really sorry to hear that your step daughter, you and your family were close to this and hope that you all can come to terms with everything as soon as possible

Reflects the tabloid nature of news reporting these days TAITA. Heard an interview with George Negus recently lamenting the state of affairs. One can only hope the phone hacking scandal reins things in a bit, but I doubt much will change.

Awful situation for your family to be so close to.

Journalism is going through a huge shift. The tabloid will always be around, but what's dying a death is 'printed truth'. By that I mean journalists researching a story and committing it to 'paper'. What you have now is 'print' journalism, because of online, becoming 'story updated as facts come to hand'. Once, you lived and died by what you committed to press. Now you can publish (online) and update as you go.

But back on topic: the tabloid, unfortunately, sells papers/media. It's about elicting an emotional reaction from the reader/viewer, usually outrage/pity.

I feel for George Negus and his recent current affairs failure. It opened with the promise of being news + a bit more. The first episode he was trying to cover so much he was literally out of breath. It then degenerated into one of those "compare the price of dishwashing liquid - ARE YOU BEING RIPPED OFF" type of shows..

You could see him squirming as he was forced into sheer tabloidism and popularism. I swear I saw a tear roll down his cheek as he led with a story on some irrelevant piece on garbage disposal units.

I paid a visit to the hail damage assessment centre in Airport West this morning. My wife's little old Mazda was written off in exactly 14 seconds. Not unexpected.
