What do you mean? I reckon he should probably have been paid for his design once and then it becomes public property, perhaps a perpetual annuity for his kids while it's in use maybe. Perhaps with a clause that it has to be approved for fair use by an approved indigenous body. It's more an interesting copyright case. It's technically not a national flag so is treated differently to other flags so has a different legal definition.

The race thing is totally irrelevant other than the people who bought the design are arseholes and are profiting from something that isn't really something that should be profited from. Like that Pharma bro in the US or a guy in Australia that put in a patent for the human genome and sent claim letter to every genetic research lab in the world claiming that they needed to pay up or cease and desist any research.

It isn't outrage over nothing, it's just poor behaviour from businesses that are morally deficient. To me it's no different to any other corrupt profiteering.

The Australian government should not have made it a "Flag of Australia" if the design had been copyright and controlled by others.
I'm not sure if it was commercialised prior to that time.
If not, you could argue the value is in the Flag, and not in the design and that they don't have the rights.

But neither did the guy who patented the genome which was public property. Or Martin Shkreli who bought up the rights to sell drugs for rare diseases and put the price up from $1.50 per tablet to $30 per tablet for his company's profit. There are literally millions of ways to make big money out of doing legal but morally questionable things.

There are plenty of people who go around patenting existing things like the gene sequences and send out letters of claim against people using it the way that has always been possible in past fair use. Often they fall down in court but it's easier to pay $5000 to some loser than get a lawyer to take it to court which you would be lucky to get out of for under $50,000 even if it's immediately thrown out.

At the moment big companies are fighting to be able to use people's clothing and graphic designs to make money and not have to pay them for it. Companies like K-Mart will steal a designs and pay no royalties to the original designer.

Found an iconic image and found a way to license it for profit, yes the old bloke shouldn't have sold it to them but if you were old and had fu** all someone handing you a bag of cash would be pretty handy. People have done it in the past with domain names where early on they went and bought up all the .com names for companies and blackmailed them to buy it back for huge money. My wife used to be a commercial lawyer, there are plenty of campaigners in the world that will act in shitty ways to profiteer.

Yeah I don't know much about the backstory but I thought I heard he might have had others dispute his having designed it even. Sounds like a massive douche. I thought I heard them say he would allow the use as long as you weren't profiting from it. Anyway it's a pretty ugly look and pretty sad that while they should be enjoying a celebration of indigenous contribution to the game, a bunch of greedy campaigners have made it messy and taken the focus in the wrong direction.

That's your choice, I just see it like any arse-hat that sells out morals for money. No-one comes out of it happy. The company trashes it's brand and it probably hasn't been the cash cow they'd hoped etc. Making it a race issue is irrelevant, it's just like that Shkreli guy, the court of public opinion turns against arseholes eventually. If it was an Aussie flag a lot of people who are making it a race issue would have a serious melt down.

Some are so weird you wonder why they chose them for you, I have had asian bride ones- **** knows why, but the best was these hoodies that had a photo realistic fat hairy gut printed on the front of them. That sounds very Qanon. I reckon there is a very good chance that there are Epstien style pedo rings, just don't buy the whole massive world satanist cult thing myself. It's possibly true that politicians are syphoning money as well but that story just sounds all a bit too implausible to me. I might end up looking stupid later but there are so many conspiracy theories I can chose one that seems any more plausible than others. You have to be careful calling it racism. I think people are lacking compassion for their plight at times but it doesn't automatically make it racist. There is a big difference between lacking compassion and racism. Most people seem to be of the opinion that it's just a non issue and if one of their own sold it so it's their own problem. There is always a fine balance between paternalistic taking control of all their issues instead of letting them sort it out themselves. You could easily argue that it's an issue that they will have to lobby government for and doing so will be a good way for their administrative bodies to get some taste of using political clout.

Sometimes having a cause worth fighting for helps bring the disparate bodies together in a common aim and they might be able to use it to better a whole lot of indigenous outcomes. Most white politicians seem to **** up Indigenous affairs, they can't do a worse job themselves.
