If housing suddenly gets affordable ( and it might ) it can cause a whole lot of other problems.

They could build things like roads, hospitals, schools, transport systems etc. Maybe some homeless shelters etc but keeping the economy ticking over is the most important thing to do. Good economics means spending on infrastructure when money is cheap and projects are drying up. Could have bought back our power systems and made it bulk renewable and cheaper for consumers.

Mass Transit for Melbourne.

Time to reopen moorabbin and the disco.

I'm not big on kicking them on the deficit. Like Labor spending during Global Financial Crisis, they are better to go into debt and keep things moving. Most of us are still keeping our heads above water because of it. They should be praised for spending when necessary. The people who are scum are big business who pay bonuses to executives because they count the government money as income. That's scummy, I have spent my own money to stay afloat and not taken anything, It's starting to bite, guys on more than a million a year could take a hit on their bonuses. The Caymans don't need more money stuck into anonymous accounts.
We survived the last GFC because of Labor. We wouldn't have survived this one even without COVID. It was coming anyway and we were already in an enormous amount of debt under the Liberals. All COVID has done is sped up the inevitable.

Put us in more collective debt than we've ever been in as a country combined. All in six years.

They are good economic managers though, they'll get us out of this one :thumbsu:😅

Doesn't have much left to sell off for the funds to get out of a recession, it's what the Libs do "oh hey, we're incurring debt here, lets sell these assets for immediacy to look great".

one of the best things i've heard on the whole COVID thing:
"COVID is not a disruptor, it's an accelerator."

And whoever has said that is 100% correct.

gringo2011 some more disgraceful economic management. Add it to a long list.

The world economies had all started to slow before this. It's like a financial bushfire, months of drought and a heat wave made it into a catastrophe. This was a disaster on the back of an already shaky foundation. It's going to take a long time for the world to move out of this. A lot of the problem is the world needs strong financial reforms but no-one in power wants to do the hard decision making or are compromised.

It's always been a bit of a myth that the press has allowed to go on without scrutiny that one. Part of any economic management is riding the bumps of bad times using discretionary spending to keep things on track and making smart choices to save money in the good times. We wasted the mining boom and could have set up a future fund for us all. We have always had it too easy here and both sides are pretty dumb money managers.

Our media are pretty complicit in selling lies. I remember reading an article by an economist saying that free university that Whitlam bought in made the country a lot richer and lifted a generation up...but it took 15 to 20 years to filter through. Most politicians only care about their watch now and let the future go.

Have to disagree with both sides being no good at managing the economy, look at where Australia's economy was on a global scale in 2012 compared to where it is now. There's clearly one side that knows how to do it much better than the other and it's not what the Liberal media trot out. Politicians aren't very much liked on either side but it's clear both historically and present day which party this country needs.

I reckon a bit of that just happens to be where the world economy sits at that time in history. Costello was a the guy who gets praised but was a ****ing idiot. He gave heaps of money away and should have put it away for a rainy day. He gets praised for be good wen he was a disaster.

We were one of the only countries to survive the last GFC, that's not a fluke. Don't think it has much to do with world economy. We were ranked #1 two years after the last GFC. Now we're mid 20's the last time I checked.

The world has been going down this path since 2008, too much money wasted on corperations who acted irresponsibly plus too busy dodging taxes.

Covid just ripped the band aid off

Wayne Swan was the best treasurer in the world when he was in power.

Bloke did wonders during the gfc.

Does anyone know what scomo is actually responsible for.

Seems he bobs up to take credit.

When sh*t hits the fan the states front the press and take the heat.

When its at its worse he bobs up crticising them saying their responsible for implementing everything.

Hes like the worst senior manager you've ever had.

Cant wait for all states to have this under control and then put some serious pressure on the feds to actually manage the international border including quarantine.

So far everything the feds have touched here has been a fu**in disaster.
He's responsible for the funding, regulation, assessment and monitoring of aged care services in Australia.

you don't want to look at the education standards either...

The Government and Reserve bank selling all our gold on the cheap in the 1990s was one of the most short sighted things this country has ever done.

Cost us billions.

Land Clearing is up though, On par with Brasil and the congo.

I read a book recently called The Overstory, I think I'm a bit of a greenie now. It's hard to read and not want to lock away old growth forests. Dan Andrews and Morrison have been doing deals under Covid to rip more of it out.

Kazakhstan has better education.

i've had recent exposure to resources out of eastern europe and lets just say they leave us for dead. seriously their education system has flown by ours.

but if i bring it up with people here they laugh at the country name and can't believe it would be true.

we have regressed to the point people see more merit in pulling ****in rocks out of the ground and working FIFO than they do education standards. i wonder if they will be surprised if in 30-60 years all we are is a cheap labor source.

Even their internet speeds shit all over ours.

It is so sad to see how badly this country has been managed.
