I recall reading years ago that the wogs seldom ate meat due to poverty. Then when they migrated here, meat was cheap and abundant so they drastically changed their diet causingvall sorts of problems and increases in cancer and heart attacks.

Processed meats and smallgoods are a real danger.

Yeah, that's my parents in law, they said in the village you kept your chickens for eggs and livestock for milk. If they had babies you sold them or kept breeding them. Meat was for special occasions. Here my father in law eats red meat every day because after 50 years or how ever long it's still a luxury. He actually used to make all his own small goods, walked into a few hanging prosciuttos or salamis going into his garage in the past.

Agree.

I'm not doctor but I'd be looking to cut sugar 1000 times before cutting out meat when it comes to diet.

Thing with red meat is it takes ages to digest and burns a lot of energy doing so.

That's why i drink half a bottle of red with every steak to aid digestion.

There was a really good documentary on the sugar industry and how they created low fat foods as a way of diverting attention from weight increases from sugar in processed foods and drinks. Low fat food is stacked with sugar to make it palatable. It has little science in weight loss and actually just means eating more processed products with little nutrition. The sugar producers are pretty much the tobacco industry with candy stripes.

Excessive sugar and processed carbohydrates are the enemy of weight loss and good health. Check out any footage from the 1960s and most people were skinny. Enter Ancel Keys with his lipid hypothesis and the American Heart Association adopting his biased findings and the result is the obesity, diabetes, hypertension and dementia epidemic we see today. There is enough evidence available now to show that consumption of healthy saturated fats is not detrimental to health and that cholesterol is not a villian. But don't let that stop the drug companies making billions from the sale of statin drugs. IMO eating less, eating whole foods, keeping moving and having a sense of community is one of the best ways of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The men who made us fat...

I remember talking to a guy in Maui years ago and he told me that at one stage the sugar growers held incredible influence in Washington and a law was passed stating sugar was a health food and was required to be included in food.

What you are referring too was the sugar industry saving itself by producing inexpensive high fructose syrup as a revenue generator... And of course the subsequent marking campaign of low fat = healthier.

I think there are actual carcinogen in red meat as well. The processing ones are worse. I think moderate consumption is okay though.

While I agree a healthy diet contains less meat than our current societal trends, the meat itself is of low risk for carcinogenesis. Cooking it increases the risk and curing it with various chemicals also increases the risk.

The WHO has classified meat as a carcinogen, but it is a classification, not a quantification - its a bit like a puddle being a drowning risk. It is horrendous that articles include meat and cigarettes in the same sentence as carcinogens when one (tobacco smoke) is a serious carcinogen with high rates of subsequent cancer, whereas meat is a very mild carcinogen and while I acknowledge it plays a role in colorectal carcinoma, studies only show a small effect size. In other words, smoking is the Pacific ocean during a cyclone, and meat is a puddle on the sidewalk that you can step over. Both are drowning risks, but one is much worse than the other.

Also ignoring the health issues related to high sugar consumption and deliberately misguiding the public on the culprit. Processed foods contain huge amounts of sugar and salt mostly.

Possibly, I am certainly no expert on the subject. I think if you eat healthy it probably doesn't hurt to have some meat in your diet with out going over board. That's purely from a common sense point of view rather than any thing I have any knowledge on.

Both are excellent at preserving ‘food’ hence their popularity with manufacturers. Sugar is basically an overgrown grass that has zero nutritional value. It mimics and exceeds fruit for the taste buds, making it attractive to us humans. Although if you can get off it for a while it’s amazing just how sickly sweet it really is.

I know there are question marks for the zero sugar drinks, but i simply can't stomach a sugary soft drink any more.
Went to Macelleria in Richmond yesterday, surprised not to see any Vegan's there.

My son told me today that a DJ, called Marshmello, held a live immersive concert within the Fortnite game that players attended and danced along to, sharing the experience with thousands of others. At the end of the concert normal game play resumed, and the players recommenced their shooter game play.

And for the first time ever, I am feeling like the technological and generational gap is starting to become unbridgeable for me.

In my head I have always thought of myself as being toward the forefront of technological development and gaming. I was there with my stack of 20 cent pieces (remember when we could return coke bottles for 20c?) when pinball arcades evolved to have space invader machines, and defender, and galaga, and frogger. I loved the Intellivision console, before Atari came along, and have owned every Playstation console that Sony has put out. Mum and Dad owned a Commodore 64 and a Macintosh when it first came out. So I actually got to type out and print university assignments in my last year of tertiary study (oh the luxury; who can remember painstakingly hand writing 5000 word essays, with a title page and bibliography?)

So I feel like all through my existence I have been able to track and understand the emergence of different social trends. Throughout my life most have come from cinema, television, radio, sport and computers. I feel like I have been able to stay abreast of social trends emerging from each of these areas. But in the last 3-4 years I definitely feel perplexed by the direction computer gaming is heading.

People (not even going to call them kids) nowadays will prefer to watch a video of another person playing a video game than a family movie. And they gift each other real money in the process. Popular dance moves now mimic video games unkown to me, and television and cinema productions frantically trail trying to show they are with it, by portraying some of these behaviors. People have 'real' emotional friendships with other online players, and they are prone to taking on behaviours in real life that are consistent with their online avatar! And it seems that Corporations have identified the gaming platform as the best way to engage and advertise to youngsters. In-game-advertising (IGA) has a total worth estimated in excess of 10 billion US dollars. This without the myriad of social media platforms that are getting harder and harder to stay across.

I just don't get it. Honestly, my youngest is in his twenties, and is out in the real world battling away. I feel like I got through the parenting thing just in time, although does it ever really stop? I genuinely feel for some of my friends who are just starting to have children and will need to curb some/any/all of the destructive elements of immersive gaming and technology. I have always promised not to become a grumpy old man who barks at the grandkids about how much purer things were 'back in my day'. But I am almost resigned to just growing old disgracefully now. I just don't have the energy or the appreciation to keep up.

Super Bowl tomorrow and for some reason after an indifferent season in some respects I’m quietly confident.

They key on paper is Aaron Donald, ndamukong suh and the rams defence, if the pats can protect Brady then I expect them to win well.

I was seriously on the edge during the chiefs game I hope it’s not as close tomorrow.

Soooo Jack Watts.
Will he get hung out to dry by the media like Jake Carlisle? Will there be equity in treatment by the media?

Will the fact that he snorted coke off a consenting womans breasts change the perception of the incident?

Should he just be banned for being stupid enough to do this in a public venue and be filmed doing it?

Lolz.....cough cough

Port has spoken to the 27-year-old about the video and he told the club the white powder was a substance known as Wiesn Pulver, which consists of menthol, sugar and glucose.
It is commonly taken at Oktoberfest, and is legal.
The AFL is aware of the video, which emerged publicly on several social media platforms late on Sunday morning.
It is understood the AFL will make its own inquiries.

Next AFL announcement...
"We've completed our investigation and found out his name is NOT Jake Carlisle and he does NOT play for StKilda. No case to answer..
However, StKilda WILL lose its 2020 1st round pick"

My wife’s a mad Patriot’s fan as she lived in Boston for 10 years between 20 and 30 and her brother is married to a Bostonian and still lives there so I have to put up with a lot of Patriot’s talk around this time of year. I actually watched a Belichick doco last night and it reminded me that all Patriots Super Bowl wins have been heart stoppers which is a bit strange for such a dominant team. Who knows maybe it will be a blowout.

Donald is an absolute freak and is the big concern for the Pats. Offensively the Rams are powerful and have a great young coach but I have seen them go completely missing every now and again in the past 2 years.... But if they are on, this could be a shootout as both offenses are so hard to stop and so well coached.

Gonna be a fascinating one!

On a side note, do you get to Boston often? I go every 2nd year in May, to visit family. It’s a sports lovers paradise of a city. In May when I’ve been there and the Bruins and Celtics are in the playoffs and the Redsox have started, it has such a great atmosphere. Could see myself living there one day.

As a bit of a veteran in this area (60 plus), I advise embracing your ignorance about the whole thing & just hang on to the bits of technology that you really need. Consult the young when you're confused (makes them feel good & saves you hours/days/weeks).
Embrace being grumpy, you've earned it but on a slightly serious note don't indulge it. You run the risk of going from endearingly grumpy to a right kent that nobody can put up with!

see im not sold on that … the native people of northern Norway and the peoples that have lived for generations above the artic circle seem to not have any real issue with cancer wiping them out .. that said for the most part their diet is eating meat that has a high fat content and often eating it raw … from my travels up there its the introduction of soft drink that is the biggest worry for them
