Easier to just blame the unions lol...

Thanks for that VDS , that's what i'm doing. Blindly blaming the Unions.
I haven't seen it with my own eyes.
I haven't had friends who used to go to work at nights in case they were needed.... and sleep in the beds provided.
I haven't seen a teams of fitters twiddle their thumbs for a weeks when there was no work.
I haven't seen people practically running their own business while they were at work.

I'm mindlessly blaming the unions. ( i actually blame the people that let them bend them over ).

The only reason the SEC was broken up , was because the government had no idea where to start with turning it into an efficient operation.
I know plenty of people who were good at their jobs, got a package and went straight back to work with the new owners.
I know plenty of others who never worked again, and i know why.
I also think its not their fault, people are corrupted by the kind of putrid culture that was in that place.

I do kind of detest the the company i work with used to have to negotiate with the Union thug who went on to get jailed for terrorising office workers whilst wearing a Balaclava. ( yes you'll tell me he's an innocent scapegoat , but he was a horrible prick to deal with ).

Everything the unions did there was wonderful, like Normy Gallagher, he was a great champion for the workers.

One of the things that was foreseen, when it was privatised is what happened in similar circumstances in the USA.
No-one built large efficient base-line power stations.
They built low capital gas turbines.
Armed with this knowledge we have allowed the free market to build....... low capital gas turbines.

We also saw the likes of SP Ausnet taking over the transmission maintenance. Wheras the old SEC had been gradually replacing the old wooden poles with concrete , for a lower lifetime cost, the new owners went right back to chucking in the cheapest crap they could find.

Now the actual companies that "retail" it to households. There are a number of them.
Are we suggesting that they are operating like a Cartel?
Please forward your information to the ACCC.

The unions had corruption for sure, just like the government does, the police force does the ATO does etc. Basically there is always some arseholes that steal. Big companies do it without ever getting bad publicity for it. Most infrastructure is paid for by the government but operated by private companies, we call them PPPs but they are not partnerships. We buy the trains and a company gets to use them and we pay them for the privilege so share holders get the profit, the current ones in Melbourne are French so we send the bulk to them. We build turbines and give them to a company to operate them and guarantee them profits so the don't have to wear any liability. The same companies give money to political parties who decide who gets these contracts. That is a lot higher level theft from our coffers than some small fry union thugs. The whole system is set up to gouge the people who own it all. Us.

Of course there’s down time in that industry, are you suggesting that you not have a night shift or that it’s possible to simply call a tradie when you have a problem.

I’m sure you don’t object to the local firemen sleeping in beds at the station, priding themselves on their cooking skills, perhaps we should have a call out police force as well. Why is it that some people just can’t accept that the nature of some jobs in some industries requires staff to be on duty in case their needed and that sitting idle is bloody boring in fact much worse than being busy imo.

I’m sure you have your own experiences and opinions based on what you’ve seen. That doesn’t change the fact that whilst norm Gallagher and the like were terrible we had a society that created that situation. I remember very well how tradies and blue collar workers were paid crap and looked down on by many people. Well the unions used their bargaining position to turn that on its head and made out like bandits or bosses into the bargain.

I’m sure some union officials have behaved poorly, criminally in fact I know they have just as some employers have. It was a very poor politically motivated decision driven by ideology and it has been a disaster for the people of this state imo.

Yawkey i had mates who got apprenticeships at the SEC. They went to work and slept. It was great for an 18 year old who then got his days off, but at the end of their time they were pretty pissed when they didn't get jobs there and didn't have enough skills to get jobs elsewhere. One that did stay there was telling me about his first week as an apprentice. As a 16 year old he was issued with a tool box and told where to go. He went and saw the supervisor who told him to wait until they got round to him. He told me he sat on his toolbox for a week.
Now i've seen my father train apprentices and i knew plenty of tradies. They'd have been appalled to treat a new kid like that. Worse than a Rookie under Ross Lyon.

That was one of the things they did under the privatised system that worked.
They contracted out the maintenance, and the maintenance people got paid to be on call for certain shifts. Paid good rates if they got called in.

In the area down there people were very very very careful about employing ex-SEC workers. Normal companies, running machine shops , and mechanics, and builders and plumbers would try to recruit from elsewhere.
I agree that society made it that way.... You can say the unions made out like bandits, but they left plenty of unemployable people in their wake when all.

I often see it like a big pendulum. Using this case as an example, the workers there were on a good wicket. It could of stayed like that , but it got pushed too far, the pendulum swung too far , until everyone knew it was wrong.
Then the pendulum swung back, at first it seemed a lot better, but then the pendulum swung too far back the other way.

In the area down there people were very very very careful about employing ex-SEC workers.

I've been to China quite a few times now and apart from the food my other favourite thing is finding new Chinglish signs.
Below are a few I found.

This was on a 2nd floor handrail

My inconvenience?

Don't rush the elevator

They're bloody dangerous these side tables

So saw a young lady try to commit suicide on my comute home today. Horrible stuff. Couldn't do anything about it. Stuck in traffic that was moving.

Jesus, hope she was alright.

Jesus, hope she was alright.
I saw a cop car come up on the left hand side. Then saw all these people on the overpass. Thought they were protesting. Got closer and yeh. Lady was the otherside or the fencing. Others on the otherside. About 5 of them desperately hanging onto her. One a massive bear hug. Others hanging onto arms. Legs.

Heart breaking how much burden humans carry. But uplifting to see ordinary people looking out for one another.

I call it Scomo's Stasi. Send out the "special police" to take down any critics. It sounds like fascism or the old commie regimes.

The guy who dobbed in the tax department gets a heap of life sentences and Pell gets 6 years for inflicting actual abuse and years of covering up abuse with ex prime ministers gushing over his character. The system has lost the plot.

The new version has 300 million hits on spotify and 200 million views on YouTube.
So funny that Billboard threw it off the country top100 for not being country enough so he got Billy Ray Cyrus on board and it went straight to number 1.

You fascinate me

If you met me you would be very disappointed. Im probably the least fascinating person you could meet. Couldnt be a more simple guy. Love sport love VB love gambling love chicken and chips love KFC and love my family and friends. All very boring.

That makes you special these days. I'm sitting here with my smashed avocado face mask eating quail on quinoa sipping on a craft beer brewed from the yeast on a brewers nut sack and thinking how normal I am and how exotic that all sounds.
