Yeah, Australia definitely burns you much worse. We have a hole over the antarctic that lets in more UV than in Europe or equator line countries.
Remember when the world got together in a kum ba yar moment of effective environmental management still lauded as the most effective universal action of its type in history. Well...the Chinese didn't read the memo and they went on producing more and more of the stuff as it is the cheapest way to produce foam and other products. Their efforts have had a significant effect on the world action - ruining the world effort and delaying the repair process. A conference I attended had cancer specialists from New Zealand announcing that they now have melanoma rates in the same order of magnitude as Australia. The rates here in Australia and now in NZ are far higher than the northern hemisphere countries with similar proportions of pale skinned people. This doctor suggested a link to the ozone hole so that NZ and Australia are now exposed to far more UV light than is healthy resulting in raised incidence of melanoma.

You don't like the tropics then? I love tropical weather.
Absolutely hate it, the only thing worse than a 40 degree day is a hot and humid one.

You know what the bayside looks like all those fair skinned blondes and redheads, well we fit right in. I spend five minutes in the sun and I tan up which makes me a rarity around here where most tans are from a salon or bottle and some people have a trump like orange look. It sounds terrible but I think Australia is a pretty marginal place for humans anywhere north of Perth and 50 miles from the coast. Even then it can be bloody uncomfortable during summer, maybe I’m just not cut out for it.

This is just another reason so many people are calling for the tax exempt status to be removed. The various religious groups will argue that the housing is needed, contains community facilities and a low cost housing component and profits will be used to support the various charities they run etc.

I personally don’t buy it and it follows on from a wave of closures where smaller Anglican parishes for example were closed, the properties developed and the profits supposedly used to build churches in high growth areas. There’s so much wrong with that rationale even if you believe it, which I don’t, it just smacks of the Kennett style arguments that churches argued against.

St bedes in Elwood was closed along with the much needed kinda and the church turned into apartments with a new block built on the kinda site. Thanks we paid for it and now we can just jog on while they use the windfall for who knows what, they’ll never open their books.

In a related topic state schools don’t require planning permits which makes sense as long as any developments are related to the schools core business, educational activities operating mainly during school hours.

Elwood high has entered into an agreement with the MCC to turn an area of the school into hockey pitches that will have floodlights and operate 7 days a week until 10 pm. The school which is loosing some basketball/tennis courts and an open grass area will have full access and use of the area during school hours. Apart from a financial agreement what did the school gain and how does it improve the educational experience of the students.

Given that it’s not related to the sites core business which the land was set aside for how the hell is that fair and reasonable. I’m not affected by it but I feel sorry for the people who live in the two formerly quite sleepy streets that will be looking at it and putting up with the noise and traffic. I have nothing against the MCC I played pennant tennis for st Kilda/MCC for over 10 years.

Council can’t appeal, residents can’t appeal which I find interesting in a watch this space way. A new twist on the selling off and rezoning of school sites ?.

Hit 46 degrees in my area Friday, and apparently was 54 in Keith. Have had a catastrophic bushfire burning 10km down the road from my place and dry lightning causing other spot fires nearby. Over 20,000 hectares burnt. Luckily the major ones are now under control but it was getting scary on Friday night when I couldn’t see past my front lawn due to smoke.

I wonder if what was predicted in relation to the hole in the ozone layer is actually happening.

I thought I read recently that it repaired itself. Anyone know different?
I think you will find that you have confused that with the Ho Zone Layout
Which has indeed repaired itself since you left the force! ;)

As for the Ozone, i'm afraid it's still f*cked, and we will all end up getting screwed!

It is progressing towards repairing itself but the progress is inconsistent. As the Antarctic warms, more of the ozone hole travels north and manifests as weakening of the protection that the ozone usually affords us. It is as yet unpredictable exactly where the higher UV levels will manifest, but there is a ring of probability of the effect that crosses over southern Australia and NZ. I suspect South America may also be affected.

Ozone layer had largely repaired itself since the ban on ozone depletives.
Not much to do with global warming, lots to do with Australians getting cancer.

Chinese. But hey if we stop using ozone depletives, why don't they just follow our lead, like they will with CO2?

Nope. She refuses to fly so she must go by boat. She would need a Navy escort in Africa. Good luck.

I'm sure the starving kids and adults in the millions with no electricity and water really care or know about her anyway.

54 degrees! God help them.

What a terrible situation. Glad your house was spared; that must be a helpless feeling.

It looks apocalyptic.

http://google.org/crisismap/australia for a basic view of NSW, and it's not just NSW, we have active transport advice for NSW, QLD and SA with multiple post codes on "normal" freight lines into and out of the states.

Having had a random small fire years back, yeah, NSW is copping it hard, QLD is under a bit as well, SE South Aussie is under a bit as well, so it's a bit problematic at present for multiple states leasding to shortages as everyone tries dealing with shit and conditions being rather poor.
