Chinese officials have hit out at the United States, accusing the country of having severe problems with racism and police violence.

That is absolutely appalling!
Bad enough how they treat personal freedoms and women over there, but that was a new low in unadulterated racism!
They have become an exceptionally ugly elitist society which is now permeating over here with their numbers!

They are technically correct.
USA has a problem with Violence. China would repress and arrest those capable of such acts. Tiananman square could easily have escalated but China dealt with it quickly and efficiently.
USA has a problem with racism. China would get rid of those ethnic groups, hence eliminating racism.

USA has a problem with Violence. China would repress and arrest those capable of such acts. Tiananman square could easily have escalated but China dealt with it quickly and efficiently.

Yes, it's history repeating. There have been race riots going back to the Watts riots in 1965, but progress has been painfully slow when it comes to racism and discrimination. It's almost thirty years since the Rodney King riots in L.A. Racial tension remains close to the surface, ready to erupt.

Interestingly, the Muslim quarter in Zian has been there for 800 years.

Bad Idea). The Chinese are a huge player in shaping the world - they are expanding their borders at the expense of others and they have a long history of low consideration of individual rights. They are authoritarian, just like the USA and North Korea. Human rights are not a priority.

That is true. It's not a society for the individual. I think we find it hard to accept them as a new world power base because they have a society so removed from what we believe in. The west lost a lot of the freedoms that we once had as soon as communism became a non player IMO. We are tracked, we have had our rights to peaceful protest taken away, we have silenced our media, we have removed lots of the opportunity to move through the classes etc. A lot of the fears we have of them we already have ourselves but we still have the narrative of individual freedom still ringing in our ears. The US has used financial imperialism to rule the world and as that slips away it makes it a pretty uncertain time. A lot of the wealth and privilege of the west is based on gouging the worlds poor. It's not going to be an easy adjustment.

Travelling through China in late 2016, I was awed by the sheer scale of the country and it s modernisation, bearing in mind I was a dilettante tourist, however we saw a lot in 15 days of mainly rail travel. Most amazing country I have ever been to.

However the people are cowed. Our tour guides would not engage in any conversation that related to China, and fair enough, they have to live there.

The guides on the Yangtze were the most interesting. It was flooded for the three gorges dam project (which incidently gives power to more than 50 million people). When asked where they lived, they would point down, but would be at pains to tell us how wonderful their new concrete apartment was in the tower blocks in their new towns. Sure there would be some truth in having the new mod cons, but your could tell they did not want to critisise losing their village.

China has lifted its citizens out of abject poverty, and has created wealth for hundreds of millions, but there is a price individually. When there is 1.4 billion individualism is not what it is in a country like Australia.

Agree with most of what you are saying Joff , but having dealt with them in the Tourism industry
they were always big picture to deal with , always courteous to a fault similar to Japanese
but the worst thing you can do is embarrass them publicly making them lose face , quiet thoughtful
conciliatory approach it is in their DNA .

In contrast dealing with USA Tourism Industry was dealing with brash born to rule mentality .

Tis a shame though. I've been to the States many times and for the most part the masses are good peeps!

Its hard to look back and find any actual good ones.

When they did the referendum for becoming a republic i could never understand the people who wanted a popularly elected leader. It was the argument for this that really derailed the move to becoming a republic. Could they not see what a mess the American's were, but they still wanted to be like them.

If we are on the subject of USA and disgraceful, then the US meat industry is a great example. The meat packaging industry in the USA is controlled by 4 major players who have formed a cartel. They not only control the price paid at the checkout but they also control the price paid to cattle ranchers. These companies make billions & billions of dollars profit per annum, yet the cattle ranchers are struggling to survive. What is the US governments proposed solution to the problem? We need an assistance package for the cattle ranchers. Fcuking brilliant.... so now, not only is the consumer being royally screwed on price at the checkout, but their taxes will be used to help maintain the profits of a cartel.

We have a situation here with Coles & Woolworths screwing suppliers on price and then excessively marking up the product to make huge profits.The cosmetic standards of the supermarkets are causing the wastage of perfectly good food and also increasing the price at the checkout.
You can also add milk, petrol, utilities, and health insurance into the mix...... Things need to change in this country or our standard of living will just continue to erode and more and more people will fall below the poverty line.

I don't think Kennedy would have lasted a year under today's media conditions. He was hiding plenty.

We have , well used to have a lot of groups before Covit be it adults or school kids stay at our hotel from Japan and China and they are always polite , the groups from the US , Plain hard work and F ing rude

Yep and self employed tradies who have done really well during our crazy long housing boom, can handle a downturn, like taking a pay cut.
Those who lost their jobs won't get employment from this scheme and won't be able to renovate.
