To me one of the things is that people don't see the full ramifications and the flow on affect.
The Automotive Industry was/is a huge thing, supporting far more than the direct employee's we are hearing about in the new.
Many of the jobs suit people who are not suited to getting university degree's or dealing with the public.

We hear that .."we don't need it , look the economy is fine", "hey look at these great cheap cars we can get from overseas".
The economy is fine now. It hasn't hit yet. The full unemployment hasn't hit yet.

We are apparently a "developed economy"
That means the service industry generates more wealth than the industrial sector.
We also have one of the highest GDP per capita.

How can that work if we get more and more service and less industry?
The definition above does not mean that the jobs in the service industry are more lucrative than those in the industrial sector.

Can i afford to get someone to mow my lawn or hang my televison , if my own job only pays the same as someone mowing lawns?

If we look at the USA there are corporations like Google/Amazon/Ford/GM/Boeing. Huge and diverse. The list is huge.
There are plenty of over payed bastards working for all of the companies. They don't mow their own lawn, or hang their own televisions or do their own landscaping etc.

If you get a degree and get a job with one of these companies you have a chance of doing OK and going up to a level where you also don't mow your own lawn.

Take away all these opportunities like we are doing in Australia , and who the hell are all the service providers going to provide services to?

Importers, Local subsidiaries, Agents, simply do not offer the same opportunities.

No girls and boys its not viable for you ALL to get a job in IT. IT is a service industry.
100% this. Car industry decision is a disgrace. There was a massive return on the taxpayer subsidies.

Any other country and they'd be storming Parliament house.

But as you so rightly put it. People don't see the ramifications ling term, because it affects all if use directly or indirectly.

Instead, they drink the kool aid and three word slogans as Gospel.

I call it jumping over $100 notes to pick up a dollar coin.

So nice to read a robust discussion from people with different points of view re politics but with much common ground and all done with respect and well articulated arguments.

So different from the you're a nazi/you're a ... I am too foolish to read the site rules/cuck/snowflake BS you get that passes as discussion on twittet and other SM lately.

The Button plan.

Why on earth was every government since the early 90's terrified to call it the bullshit it was and just stop.
It made the industry more efficient, then it made it nonviable.
Why did we cling to it , when it was clear that it was no longer serving its purpose.

Did anyone else here see JET tonight?!? What a ******* great show, their first in over 6 years. Was incredible

They were a good band in their day good they are back but didn't see it.

Yeah I heard a good interview with a guy from one of the unis saying that the auto industry subsidy was returned back in taxed wages from employees about 10 times over. He also said that nearly every country has government support for their auto industry. His big thing was that once they close heavy manufacturing you become unable to turn them around to build arms and aircraft etc that traditionally governments do when there are large scale conflicts. We are unable to produce nearly anything now.

They were great last night, considering it was their first show in so long and they have only been rehearsing for the last week or two apparently. Made a few mistakes early on lyrically but otherwise was an awesome show - even got my record signed!

Knew there was something i liked about you.

Ok this is a random thread so ive a random complaint.
My train trip to work is under 2 hrs. But not by much.
Now in the mornings its free co's i scan off before 7oclock:thumbsu:
Then coming home it cost me $4:10:thumbsu:
So thats pretty cheap:thumbsu:
BUT!!!! If the trains F*** up and get delayed or cancelled or break down ( like happend to me yesterday). And because of this poor service my trip goes over the 2 hr mark i then get charged $8:20 insteado_O
Now i know problems happen. Thats just life.
But im finding it hard to get my head around the fact that if their service runs smoothly i get charged. BUT if their service runs badly i get charged doubleo_Oo_O
Thats like saying to Mowman " how much to cut my lawn".
And he says" ill charge you $50 to do a good job and $100 to do a shit job" .

I am a digital st Kilda member , as I have a bad back and can't go to games . I signed up again in November, I have my membership card and new cap . I signed up again on the afl app site to watch games . I have been watching games from last season as usual. Then they did a big update yesterday or when ever. Now when I try watch a game I get about a minute then it takes me to the sign up afl pass page . It obviously is no longer recognising that I am already signed up . But I can't work out where to go as I'm not a Telstra user but I am a st Kilda member . Anyone else have this problem, did you solve it , any advice ? I can't even find help on the afl site as all it keeps talking about is Telstra afl pass which it keeps wanting me to buy .

Public services are not business and are not there to be run at a profit. Can they become more efficient? Absolutely.

But guess what? They employ people who pay tax and spend their income on consumer goods, thereby tipping money back into the economy and boosting bank profits through their mortgages.

Unions are not squeaky clean. Then again, they don't bring in 457s at the expense of local jobs who once again, tip there income back into the economy instead of sending it overseas to their family.

Nor do unions exploit 7-11 workers aye?

It's funny how we retain our right to negotiate a fair income when applying for a job, but when the unions do it, it's evil.

What about all the crap business owners who suck money out for their own benefit and go bust?

The majority of businesses are just as inefficient because they have an old mentality. Problem is that the easy path to profit us more about cutting costs and jobs than innovating.

Once again I draw your attention to banks and the big 2 supermarkets. Huge profits for shareholders and shit pay for workers. And cutting jobs to boot.

The BCA are always whinging about something and saying if you do this or that, then it creates jobs. I call Bullshit because all they do is push existing workers harder and pocket the difference. And as soon as things go pear shape, it's the workers who get the chop.

As Joffa says, give it all back.

I agree with what you are saying . I just want to add . Commonwealth bank made a record profit last year , yet their local branch has sacked all their tellers and now you have to use an ATM inside the branch . There is one person you can ask how to do something and some rooms which I assume you can make an appointment to get a loan or something. At a lot of supermarkets they are taking away the shop assistant and you are supposed to scan and pack it yourself but you don't save any money [emoji383] they just make a bigger profit. I refuse to do it myself as it's putting someone out of a job , if everyone refused then they would have no choice . Too many people are like sheep and just do what they are told. Save peoples jobs after all these are the jobs our kids usually fill as they get experience. It's stupid and wrong.

Somewhere, you will have received an AFL log in number and you would have created a password when you started using the app.
That's what it is seeking from you now.
It is wanting to verify that you are indeed Brains Trust 66 (or whatever).
You need to sign in with that login and password.
Once you do that you will be okay.
I had the same problem and it worked for me.

Ignore the above, those were the instructions to get it working last week.
But yes, they've changed the site in that time.
Let me see if I can get mine working.

I can't find where to put anything . I have logged in but I still couldn't get anywhere . I logged in and went to manage my account , and then I go to video and click on the Saints game as usual but it takes me back to the Telstra afl pass page again .

Useless.
You would have received an email from the AFL about activating the AFL Live Pass. I did.
I hit AFL Live Pass Support URL in the email.
To find the options are FAQ and nothing.
Typed in "How to get the Live Pass working?".
And ended up on a support page where the first post is from a St Kilda supporter who re-signed in November, had the app working till yesterday and now when he logs on he finds it wants him to pay again.
Exactly my situation, not sure about you.
There is an option to click on "restore app purchase".
He did that, as did I.
And the app hangs.
You are not alone.
Looks like a Telstra stuff up.

Hahaha that was my post, I got it working finally . I was putting in the wrong details . I logged out , put in the correct details , then went to manage my account or something like that , now it showed more info then I had to sign in again this time with the details I used wrongly the first time and it worked . It had when I signed up , when it finishes etc . Then I went to videos and now I can play them all again . Sorry it's not very clear but I dint know it was going to work . My mistake was the first login was wrong even though it accepted it , it wouldn't accept it to go any further . So my first login had my email address and a password . Then later I put in a username , kremmen2 and another password and bingo . So stay away from restore app purchase if , like me you bought it through the Saints as a digital membership.

Don't get me started on the self checkouts at supermarkets these days. I refuse to use em unless I have like 1 item and there's a queue for the actual checkouts.

But considering there are predictions something like 50% of jobs could be automated in the coming decades it seems pretty much inevitable.

Although I don't like the idea of people being put out of a job and struggling to survive as a result of it, I hate the idea of someone wasting their life doing an unskilled job even more.

But some people want a job and will do anything it takes to not be unemployed but those types of jobs are being taken away . It's also the types of jobs that students can do to help pay their way through college. There are also the people who are unskilled due to lack of education or might just be not very smart up they are smart enough to do those sorts of jobs. And also less people working means lower wage bill , is that money being passed onto the customer, I don't think so, it's just more profit.

I agree. But unless we introduce a living wage/basic income or something to counteract the vast numbers of forced unemployment we might be facing then I don't see how it works. People need money to survive and we are a demand based consumerist society that needs people to have jobs to spend money on shit to keep the rest of the population in a job. All I can see automation doing is stripping demand out of the system while sending more profit to the companies able to implement it.

Then we have governments intent on cutting taxes and welfare at all costs. What happens to the welfare system when tax revenues continue to fall while more and more people need it. Imo it'll take a massive shift in the way society distributes and shares wealth to overcome the problems we could face. But good luck getting that to happen.

No girls and boys its not viable for you ALL to get a job in IT. IT is a service industry.

No, it's not. IT as practiced by Accenture or IBM absolutely is, it's a terrible industry. But "IT" as practiced by tech startups and other companies (who I've worked for my entire career) actually creates jobs by importing, selling to people outside the country.

I don't know if this industry can create enough jobs to soak up all the demand in the country, probably not. But at least it's worth a try - better than having to pay a car company more and more cash every four years to keep jobs here.

It isnt just the jobs that the car companies create, its all the superfluous manufacturing they create as well. Holden dont make their own brakes and suspension components, they outsource all those kind of things to smaller companies who now will have to restructure due to much less demand.

Completely agree. We and other countries are going to have to try universal basic income at some point. I very much hope it works. I love my job and industry, so I'm happy to work until I drop, but if others can't find a vocation then I'm pretty happy that they play PlayStation all day.

Take away the people who wipe down the tables at a shopping centre food court, replace the paper in a public toilet , bring in the trollys at supermarkets or any other mind numbing brain dead ' unkilled' job you can think of and the world would be a very filthy disorganized place.
A job is a job.

There is a constant flow of contractors going in and out of those plants just to service the plant.
The range of jobs they have is huge.
Chemists, Metallurgists, Engineering , the list is long.

The subsidies were a joke. It was like asking your child what it would take to turn up to school, kid says money.
Meanwhile we continued to make imported cars cheaper through poor trade agreements and decreasing import tariffs.
I'll give Trump one thing, he has stopped those bastards doing the same thing in the USA. He's already caused a couple of new mexican car plants to be cancelled.
